It still seems like yesterday. Time has flown by but it has been a very exciting, engaging and satisfying journey. The kind of experience that a business manager has in India, is very distinct and demanding, when compared to running a business in other parts of the world. Things are so dynamic and fast changing here, that it is almost like waking up in a new India every morning. Over the last eight years, as a system and as a team, we have the satisfaction of having turned the corner for our business in India. India now ranks as the 7th largest market for The Coca-Cola Company from being 19th on the list in 2006. More importantly, we have built a solid foundation for our business and are on course to achieve our 2020 Vision. Having achieved our immediate goals, the time is now right for a new leader to take over the operational responsibilities of India and South West Asia Business Unit. I am glad that the Company has entrusted Venkatesh Kini to lead this Business Unit, reporting into me. Venkatesh is a seasoned Coca-Cola hand, having served in various roles in the Company. Most of you would remember him as the Head of Marketing for the Business Unit between 2006-10. Also starting July 1, I will operate as the Deputy President, Pacific Group, with the additional responsibility of Pacific countries – China, Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia, Hong Kong and Macau. These are in addition to the operational supervision that I will have for the India and five South West Asian countries (Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives). I am excited at the opportunity that lies ahead of me, especially, in India and China. These are one of the biggest economies in the world and growing at a significant rate. The two combined already contribute to about 10% of The Coca-Cola Company’s volumes. A look at the per capita consumption indicates that both India and China are in the low double digits (India at 14 and China at 39) in comparison to the global average of 94. In these two geographies, we therefore need to focus on capitalizing on the latent opportunity. We also have large investments laid out for both India and China and that will stand us in good stead. I also see a significant amount of best practice sharing that can happen between these two large but similar markets. I am really looking forward to this assignment.
