Sound Seekers – www.sound-seekers.org.uk Sound Seekers Helping people with hearing loss in Africa Recruiting Trustees Organisational Background Sound Seekers is a small and unique charity based in London dedicated to helping people with hearing loss in some of the poorest communities of the developing world. Sound Seekers partners with major hospitals, health service providers and schools for deaf children to establish audiology and education services. We help people overcome the effects of deafness by building long-term capacity in Africa, providing skills so that medical staff can treat deaf people, as well as resources for teachers so that deaf children can access education. A basic right that is sadly too often overlooked in Africa once a child has hearing loss. We have projects in Cameroon, The Gambia, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Zambia to help combat some of these challenges. Trustee positions Sound Seekers is currently recruiting enthusiastic and committed trustees to join our Board. New trustees will be recruited with a range of skill sets to govern effectively and support the small staff team. Deadline: Monday 6th February 2017 Salary: This is an unpaid voluntary position. Reasonable travel and expenses will be covered. Job Description Board meetings are generally held four times per year but trustees will be expected to take a full and active role on the Board and participate in the activities of Sound Seekers. All trustees are expected to assist the team to secure a sustainable and diverse funding base for the organisation. The ideal candidate will have innovative ideas and be able to think creatively to utilise our resources in the most effective way. Person Specification Successful applicants will be expected to have: • A belief in the vision, mission and values of Sound Seekers • The time and commitment to fully contribute to the governance and strategic role of the Board (an average of about 6 hours per month) • The ability to attend Board meetings every quarter (held in London) • A positive approach and be open-minded • Strong networking capabilities • The ability to mobilise support, including through public speaking and presentations • A passion for team working, problem solving, decision making and asking difficult questions • Experience in the charitable sector or as part of a trustee board (desirable but not essential) • Experience in international development and/or working with people with hearing loss (desirable but not essential) Sound Seekers – www.sound-seekers.org.uk Sound Seekers Helping people with hearing loss in Africa While this will be a challenging role, it is also an exciting opportunity for you to play a significant role in the growth of this international development agency.
