PR E FACE H E early intention with regard to publishing pictures of on e gloves and shoes was a very modest , but having once f f got to work , I ound materials cropped up rom various unexpected quarters , and thus a more ambitious volume is the result . From the outset my aim has been to give accurate and reliable of illustrations royal and historic gloves and shoes , trusting to for of these success rather than upon any literary display , that part the matter having already been efficiently done by several well known authors . e e I Whatev r works may have been written on gloves or sho s , venture to think that hitherto no attempt has been made to illustrate the subjects by such pictures as are contained in this volume . With the exception of the pictures of gloves in the Victoria and Albert Mus eum and those taken from the Stuart Relics exhibited N G L e e e at the ew allery , ondon , every plate has be n sp cially tak n for f e this work rom the xisting article , either by photographs fu when possible or , when more convenient , by care lly made water colour drawings by myself ; in every case absolute accuracy has been attempted .
