Br., the complexity of its spikelet structur€ possibly indicating it to be a specializedderivative of Plc(:truchne.During development, the spikelet undergoes major changes,which dramatically alter its appearance.ln the immature state, all the florets arecondensed almost wholly within the glumes.Wlth maturity the spikelet,or more specilically the rhachilla, elongatesto at least 3 times its length. Consequently,the infertile florets become widely separatedfrom each other and from the hermaphrodite floret and glumes. Ultimately, the infertile florets disa iculate individually and the fertile floret falls with its callus, while the glumes remain attached to the pedicel.
