Almost 8,900 donors contributed $9.54 million to the Law School through annual giving alone. When we include bequests and special gifts, the Law School Foundation received $23.6 million this past fiscal year. These remark- able numbers reflect the strength of the Law School community and your affection for this special institution. Each gift reminds us that you value the role UVA Law has played in your life and allows us to provide a transformative education to students for years to come. Your support enables UVA Law students to learn from leading scholars and legal practitioners in classroom, clinical, and experiential settings. Your gifts sustain the unmatched student experience unique to the Law School—our wide variety of academic journals, student organizations, and activi- ties coupled with a devoted team of student services professionals who scour the country for the best students, support them throughout their years here, and send them off to exciting and fulfilling careers. We are not alone in seeing the fruits of your investments in this law school: we once again rank #1 for best professors and student quality of life in Princeton Review’s law school rankings. This year, as we continue to celebrate the Law School’s bicentennial and begin to commem- orate our centennial of coeducation, we see how deeply this institution has changed in terms of who it educates and how. We also see how much remains constant in terms of the Law School’s values of academic excellence, service to others, and the importance of community. This annual report highlights the amazing things your generosity makes possible and demon- strates our shared commitment to draw from our past and Honor the Future. Thank you for being part of this historic journey. With your continued support, we will make our third century the best yet. Risa L. Goluboff, Dean Arnold H. Lean Professor of Law Professor of History 2018–2019 ANNUAL REPORT 3 LEADERSHIP REPORT We are pleased to report that the 54th Annual Giving Campaign finished with 8,871 donors and a participation rate of 50.8%. Gift revenue totaled $23.6 million, of which $4.9 million was unrestricted. This is the fourteenth year in a row we have exceeded 50% participation. Our 50.8% participation rate is also (almost certainly) the highest among all law schools in the country, signaling to our peers, pro- spective students, and others that our alumni appreciate their education and believe in our stewardship of the Law School. Alumni from the classes of 1934 to 2021 contributed, with the classes of 1957 and 1974 surpassing 70% participation, and 36 classes meeting or exceeding 50% participation. In regional results, alumni in seven geographic regions finished with a participation rate of at least 60%, while Alabama’s Birmingham/Huntsville/Montgomery region topped the list with 67%. This year’s graduation gift cam- paign finished with 88% of the Class of 2019 making a pledge of future support. The following is a summary of the Foundation’s financial position and a report of the Alumni Association for the year ending June 30, 2019: LAW SCHOOL ENDOWMENT AND TOTAL ASSETS The Foundation holds more than $502 million in endowed and $24 million in non-endowed funds for the benefit of the Law School. In addition, the University holds $77 million and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation holds $4.7 million in endowed funds designated for the Law School. The combined value of these assets at June 30 exceeds $607 million. 2018–2019 CONTRIBUTIONS Gifts received by the Law School Foundation in fiscal year 2019, including annual giving, bequests, and special gifts, totaled $23.6 million. The 54th Annual Giving Campaign raised $9.54 million, of which $4.9 million was for unrestricted current use. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Last year, Dean Risa Goluboff attended alumni events in Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlottesville, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Northern Virginia, Palo Alto, Princeton, N.J., Richmond, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, the Law School Foundation and Alumni Association hosted receptions in Cary, N.C., Charleston, S.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Miami, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis. This fall, the Law School Foundation and Alumni Association will host alumni receptions in Boston, Charleston, W.V., Charlottesville, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Louisville, New York City, Norfolk, Philadelphia, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Wilmington, Del. 4 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SCHOOL OF LAW The 2019 reunions were a great success, with more than 1,200 alumni and guests in attendance. The 2020 reunion weekend is scheduled for May 8–10 for the classes of 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, and for the Lile Law Society (all alumni who have celebrated their 50th reunions). As always, all alumni are welcome to attend reunion weekend events regardless of their class year. This year’s Annual Report highlights how you give, why you give, and more: • Meet the recipient of the Thomas G. Slater, Jr. ’69 Scholarship, first-year Quinn Conrad. Conrad is a VMI graduate and U.S. Army officer and is the first Law student to receive the scholarship which honors Slater and his years on VMI’s board of visitors. • Catch up with another inaugural scholarship recipient: Kate Watlington ’11. Watlington was awarded the Law Alumnae Scholarship for her three years at UVA Law. Her career as a strategic advisor to project sponsors, investors, and financiers in the aspects of development and financing of power, oil, gas, and more, landed her in Charlotte, N.C., by way of Hong Kong and Singapore. • More than 1,130 alumni and friends made gifts on Giving to Hoos Day totaling over $328,750. Gifts came from alumni in 41 states and 6 countries. In honor of their 30th reunion, the Class of 1989 matched up to $200 of each gift made that day—providing over $107,000 in matching funds, to bring the total to $436,374! The Law School may have peers, but our community is unique. You make it special through your loyalty and affection, as well as your generosity. With our best wishes, F.
