A few miles to the West lies Bude and the rugged Cornish coast. A similar distance east, Holsworthy has been labelled Devon’s most traditional town with market charters dating back to the 12th Century. A little further afield the wilderness of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor welcomes adventurous walkers. Bridgerule itself has a long history, and in 1086 was recorded as Brige in the Domesday Book. Probably owing its full name to Ruald, a local landowner at the time, the village still features notable Norman architecture, including The Parish Church (St Bridget’s), and Tackbear Farmhouse. Bridgerule is divided by the River Tamar, which marked the border between Devon and Cornwall until 1844. On the eastern side, you’ll find the parish church, methodist chapel and primary school. To the west you’ll find shops, pubs and the residential areas, including the DLUX development which sits on the very edge of the village. In the 2011 census, Bridgerule’ s population was just 1,734, so it’s a quiet and unspoiled setting with a strong sense of community. While it’s a quiet rural village, Bridgerule is well connected to mainline stations at Liskeard, Barnstaple and Okehampton, all of which are within 25 miles - while the whole of Devon and Cornwall is literally on your doorstep.
