Descriptive Summary Creator: Professor Shalom Reichman (1935-1992) Title: The Papers of Professor Shalom Reichman Dates: ca. 1964-1985 [bulk: 1978-1985] Abstract: The materials in the collection reflect the professional work of Professor Shalom Reichman, a Professor of Geography at the Hebrew University, and a pioneer of Israeli geography and planning. The collection reflects R.’s public work in various ministerial and governmental capacities related to the shaping of national planning policy. The bulk of the materials in this collection concern R.’s activities as a member of the National Board for Planning and Building between the years 1978-1984. Holdings also include a large quantity of documents regarding Reichman’s activities as a consultant on national planning policy, among them for the Neighborhoods Renewal Project (Shikum Shkhunot) launched after the 1977 political turnover and the rise of the right-wing Likud party to power; and the “Israel 2000” think tank, established in the early 1990s and which led to the policy turn to sustainable development in 2005 (Tama 35). This collection reflects only a part of R.’s larger academic and professional oeuvre, since many of the papers were passed on to planners and scholars after his untimely death. The hope is that the establishment of this collection, the first-ever dedicated to R.’s legacy, will lead to the reception of further materials in the future. Biographical Note R. was born in Worms, Germany in 1935 to Bernard (Avraham Dov) and Esther-Rivka Reichman, the brother of Tuvia. The family owned a business of leather products and bags. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the family escaped to Belgium where they lived for several years, hiding their Jewish identity. R. and his brother attended a local school. In 1944, the family was caught by the Gestapo, and R.’s brother managed to escape. The young child R. and his parents were transported to Auschwitz. Both R. and his mother managed to survive, but his 4 father died in the death marches following the liberation of Dachau. After the end of the war, the family reunited with the brother, and emigrated to Palestine. They settled in Jerusalem. R. was drafted to the Israeli Army during the 1948 War, where he participated in the work of the 1949 Armistice Agreement Committee. After his release from the army, he turned to study history and international relations at the Hebrew University for his B.A. From there he continued to Geography. In 1964, R. completed his PhD dissertation at the University of Liverpool, on “The Transportation Development in Western Africa.” He then moved back to Israel and joined the Department of Geography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The next thirty years of R.’s scientific work are the story of modern geography in Israel. R. was a pioneer in four major areas in the field: transportation, history, planning and public policy, and boundaries. One of his major projects was the first “Travel Habits Survey” to be conducted in Israel. In 1975 Reichman was appointed Chief Scientist for the Ministry of Transportation in Israel. This position allowed him to integrate academic geography directly in the decision-making processes within the transportation realm. During the 1970s and 1980s R. also served as an
