365 - 1 ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT 1.1 Main features 1.1. Niger is a huge West African country, three-quarters desert and with no direct access to the sea. Over the last thirty years it has experienced population growth of nearly 4% per year, one of the fastest rates in the world, surging from 7 million inhabitants in 1985 to almost 19 million.
