Date(s) On-going annually for Spring, Summer, and Fall Semesters Brief description of activities undertaken to fulfill initiative: WBRZ established and maintains an internship program to assist students interested in acquiring the necessary skills to pursue a career in broadcasting. Participating universities include Louisiana State University, Southern University in Baton Rouge, and Southeastern University in Hammond. Students from out-of-town or out-of- state universities may also participate in the Summer semesters. The majority of interns are enrolled in an internship or independent study course, and WBRZ managers provide written evaluations of the interns’ progress as requested. Date(s) June 1 through May 31 yearly Brief description of activities undertaken to fulfill initiative: WBRZ established a scholarship with Louisiana State University for a graduating senior from the Manship School of Mass Communications to be employed by WBRZ for a period of one year as an Apprentice and to be given a broad overall exposure to the functioning of a television station. The Human Resources department is 3 available to assist students in the application process. LAB makes available up to $4,000 annually (two individual scholarships equivalent to $1,000 per semester for a year) in scholarship awards to students enrolled and attending classes, fulltime, in a fully accredited broadcast curriculum at a Louisiana four year college. The scholarship is to be awarded prior to the end of the Spring Semester. WBRZ-TV registered to participate in the lottery drawing. If chosen for one of the grants, a WBRZ intern would be awarded a $1000 scholarship upon successful completion of their internship. Although WBRZ was not one of the seven stations chosen in 2013, the station participates every year in the $1000 grants offered by LAB as an enhancement to our student internship program. WBRZ-TV anchors and reporters participate in events that promote broadcast employment development. WBRZ-TV personnel include discussions regarding their careers, the broadcast industry and educational preparation for a career in broadcast media during these events. January 30, 2013 Executive Producer of News visited with students at Broadmoor Middle School discussing the Television business, setting goals, and achieving success in broadcasting careers. February 19, 2013 Weatherman visited Central Private School 8th graders with the Weather Road Show, discussing weather events in Louisiana and career paths to becoming a Meteorologist. February 20, 2013 Weatherman visited Family Christian Academy 4th & 5th graders with the Weather Road Show, discussing weather events in Louisiana and how to become a meteorologist on TV. March 1, 2013 Weatherman visited Spanish Lake Primary School to read to the Kindergarten students as part of the festivities around Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the Read Across America event. 4 March 12, 2013 Weatherman visited St. George Elementary School 1st graders to read to them as part of the festivities for Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America. The children also asked many questions about March 13, 2013 Two high school seniors from St. Joseph Academy High School had a Job Shadow Day at WBRZ. One shadowed with Director of Production, learning about the Production department on site, as well as assisting at an off-site location for a commercial shoot. The second student shadowed a Multimedia Journalist, assisting with an interview, editing, and actually shooting video for a package scheduled to air. April 10, 2013 Weatherman visited Most Blessed Sacrament Early Learning Center to read to the Pre-K class and give a presentation on the weather, review what to do when bad weather occurs, and answer their questions about weather and being on TV. June 19, 2013 Weatherman visited 5th & 6th graders at the Tiger Challenge Camp at LSU Laboratory School with the Weather Road Show June 20, 2013 Various station departments participated in a day of learning by giving station tours to approximately 43 LSU Journalism High School Summer Camp attendees, including 4 counselors and 2 chaperones. Positions represented in giving tours included Marketing Coordinator, a Marketing intern, news producer, camera operator, content producer, two reporters, a noon newscast anchor, and a meteorologist. The event was announced live on the noon newscast, and the participants also observed the behind the scenes action in getting a Noon newscast on air.
