ThedesignofthevesselsisbasedontheSWATHprinciple.SWATHstandsforSmall WaterplaneAreaTwinHull,thusatwinhullshipwithaverylowwaterplaneinthe waterline.Duetotheverysmallwaterplane,seastatesarelargelyeliminated.Theresult isthatSWATHcraftshowanexcellentseagoingbehaviour–evenathighseas.The FederalCustomsAdministrationdeliberatelyselectedacraftwithsuchcharacteristicsto performitsofficialduties,suchascoastguardfunctions,incooperationwithother authoritiesatthebest. ForTKMSBlohm+VossNordseewerke,thisorderrepresentsacontinuationofthe SWATHprogramme,inwhichtheexperiencegatheredwiththedesignandconstruction oftheSWATHresearchvessel"Planet"leavesitsmarks.In2004,the"Planet"was elected“ShipoftheYear”.Thevesselsareconstructedinsideaproductionhall independentoftheweather.Uponconstruction,thevesselswillbepulledoutofthehall intothewaterforfinaloutfittingatthequay.
