It has not been possible to keep the original deadline of March nor to hold the meeting at the foreseen location. In order not to lose the normal bi-annual event cadence and to frustrate the efforts of all those who had presented a contribution, it was decided to postpone the meeting to the autumn and to hold it in another place. All this has led to a "pocket" edition of the meeting. Participation was lower than it usually is as only about 70 people followed the works and it was not possible to organise the traditional session dedicated to the local viticultural technicians. Notwithstanding these problems and thanks to the collaboration of some members of the Working Group, it has been possible to reach all the objectives that had been set and hence I think I can say that the meeting has had a more than satisfying outcome. In particular it has been possible to maintain the objective of enlarging the invitations to researchers coming from those Countries outside our regional area. To this aim we invited our colleagues Trevor Wicks and Wayne Wilcox, whom I'd like to thank with all my heart for having contributed to the works. This meeting has also been the start of a change in the organisation and structure of the Working Group that should finally lead to the abandonment of the sub-groups in favour of further workshops centred on specific themes. As a matter of fact we believe that such an organisation, apart from focusing research on aspects of the vine protection that are of strategic interest, could also favour an exchange between disciplines and collaboration among researchers who have been absent until now from our Working Group. To this aim, although still maintaining the division in sub-groups, a series of new and emerging themes were put forward to the members of the group. Amongst the various issues proposed some are of particular interest: the alternatives to chemical control of fungal diseases and of insects; wood diseases and functional bio-diversity. Furthermore, the attention focused on Hemiptera vectors of phytoplasms was confirmed, and especially the dual problem Hyalesthes obsoletus / Bois Noir that gives rise to increasing apprehension in the whole of Europe. The works that were presented and the discussion that followed show, if it is still necessary, that the framework of the adversities faced by the vine is still in evolution and that there are always new aspects that attract the attention of researchers. The effort of the single groups of researchers to face these issues using a holistic approach has been remarkable even if the ability to form interdisciplinary teams is still insufficient. I would like to conclude thanking all those who helped to organise this meeting and all those who have taken part and I hope to meet them the next time.
