A range of cricket events take place including; major international matches attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators, shorter events, such as the Big Bash T20 league, as well as literally thousands of smaller club fixtures. Each event, whether it be a major international match, a domestic final or a local U/10’s cricket game, requires planning and preparation. The more significant events, such as the Big Bash final or Boxing DayTest match attract huge interest, not only across the country but in many cases globally. As such these events are big business, with State governments eagerly competing to host these events because of the economic benefits that flow from hosting them. For each event there is often significant interest from the business community wanting to benefit from sponsoring, cities and councils looking to capture the visitor dollar and even local clubs wanting to attract revenue through canteen sales. As such, cricket is big business. You will take on the role of a researcher for the business community and investigate the benefits and challenges of hosting a major cricket event. Unit Expectations In completing this unit, you will be expected to: • Understand the difference between needs and wants • Understand the different types of economic resources • Explain why choices need to be made about economic resources • Show the opportunities presented to members of a community by hosting a major cricket event, such as the Big Bash final, a Test Match, the first ever Women’s Big Bash League game or the domestic one-day contest, the Matador Cup • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of hosting an international event • Design a presentation to show the findings of your investigation • Use Information and Communication Technologies to research, create and communicate your findings • Produce an expenses spreadsheet in Excel (2012 © Paul Kane/Getty Images) 2 YEAR 5/6 Integrated Case Study Major Assessment Task Investigating and evaluating the benefits of hosting a major cricket event This unit casts you in the role of a researcher for the business community of your nearest host city. A host city is a venue where at least one major cricket event will be played. Your job is to investigate the hosting of a major cricket event in your nearest host city, and to report to the business community on your findings. During the unit, you will seek to understand: • the complexities of hosting a major cricket event in terms of logistics, accommodation, venue suitability, media requirements and much more • the economic resources needed, and • the role of the local business community in such a project You will evaluate your findings and make a judgement on the benefits and challenges of this venture. You will ultimately present your recommendations to the class, who represent the ‘business community’. Task A You will collate parts of your class work and present it at the end of the unit. You will submit the following items: i. Major cricket event Treasure Hunt (Activity 2B) ii. Terms and Definitions Table (Activity 3A) iii. Economic Resources Table (Activity 3B) iv. A PCQ of the Stakeholders (Activity 5) v. An Excel expenses spreadsheet (Activity 6) vi. A picture montage (Activity 10) of the needs and wants of a cricket fan attending your selected event viii. An Extent Barometer showing your final decision (Activity 11) Task B You will deliver a 5-10 minute group presentation to the local ‘business community’ addressing the focus question: to what extent will hosting a major cricket event be a positive thing for our nearest host city? To do this, you will take on the role of a researcher and: • Investigate what is involved in hosting a major cricket event. • Evaluate to what extent hosting a major cricket event will be positive for your nearest host city. • Design and implement a presentation to convince this city’s business community of your findings about hosting the event. • Present your findings to the class who take the role as members of the ‘business community’ of this city. CRICKET SMART STUDENT RESOURCE 3 An Overview of a major cricket event in Australia Each summer Australia plays host to numerous cricket events. These include the international, where one or two Test playing cricket nations tour for a series of matches called ‘Test matches’, through to domestic games. A Test Match can go for five consecutive days and as such are valued events for the cities that host these games, especially if the visiting teams are well supported by travelling fans such as England’s ‘Barmy Army’ or India’s ‘Swami Army’. Other major events include the Big Bash League (men’s and women’s), where large crowds gather to watch teams representing each capital city over a three to four hour game. These games have high television ratings and as such are sought after by advertisers and sponsors. Lower profile events may be held away from the main capital centres, yet these are still significant events and are sought after by local councils and businesses.An example is the Matador Cup, which is a cricket carnival bringing together the state cricket teams to play in a round robin tournament at the one venue. You can imagine that a tournament such as this is highly sought after by regional centres. Other events, such as the National Indigenous Cricket carnival, the Imparja Cup, are keenly sought after by Councils looking to attract events. Here are some major cricket events held over the summer. Test Cricket • first played in 1877 • involves one or two test playing countries visiting Australia for a number of games called ‘tests’. • the Boxing Day Test played at the MCG in Melbourne, starting on Boxing Day, is arguably Australia’s most famous sporting event. • in 2006-2007, the Ashes Test series between England and Australia (as well as the one- day matches) contributed $317 million in direct expenditure to the Australian economy. Big Bash League • Australia’s domestic T20 tournament was established in 2011 • features city based franchises (Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder).
