Most of the rest of the world though has embraced teams racing. Following the first season at the Claremont Speedway (1927-28) the track promoter Mr John S Hoskins and star riders Sig Schlam, Ron Johnson and Charlie Datson joined a contingent of eastern states competitors at Fremantle and sailed to England. Hoskins and his local trio had a contract to ride at Crystal Place (London) and later competed at other tracks around the country. Historians have recorded over 600 individual meetings being held during 1928 – with both Schlam and Johnson winning several competitions. However the following year saw the beginning of teams racing with The Southern League and the Northern League (also known as the English Dirt Track League) being formed The Southern League had 11 teams (one withdrew during the season) with most based around the London area. The Stamford Bridge Pensioners were the inaugural champions after winning 17 of their 20 matches. The Northern League finished with 11 teams after six failed to compete the season. The Leeds Lions topped the league with 16 wins and a draw from their 20 matches. Formats have changed over the years – from teams of four riders competing over six heats, to teams of six competing over nine heats, to in modern times team of seven racing over 13 or 15 heats. Two riders from each team compete in every heat, with points allocated on a 3, 2, 1 basis. The big difference with teams racing is that riders work together to gain maximum points in a race. So you will see two teammates riding side by side to block the opposition riders – and a rider who finishes second behind his teammate gets paid the same money. Remember the old saying – “There is no I in team.” The only real attempt to run teams racing in Australia occurred during the 1973-74 season when a home and away series was held, featuring four riders over 8 heats of racing. The Western Australian quartet (Bob O’Leary, Les Leisk, Glyn Taylor and Col Thompson) ran their away matches first – beating Victoria and going down to both Queensland and South Australia, while the New South Wales match was washed out. It was a far different scenario when they returned to the wide-open spaces of Claremont, where the home track advantage really paid off. The locals downed Queensland (31-17), South Australia (38-10), Victoria (26-22) and New South Wales (31-17) in brilliant fashion. WA finished level with Queensland on the premiership table, both teams compiling a 5 win, 2 loss and 1 washout record. Today in Britain we have three different Speedway competitions. Many Australian riders head overseas to race in either the Premiership (formerly known as the Elite League, the Championship (formerly the Premier League) and the National League – which is a development competition for young riders. The Speedway Ekstraliga is the top division of motorcycle speedway in Poland. It has been called the “richest and most popular speedway league in the world” and attracts riders from all over the world. The Ekstraliga has the highest average attendances for any sport in Poland. Other Leagues are held in Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Finland and the Czech Republic.
