The film is dedicated to Sultan Ali Khan, a fictional pehlwani wrestler and former world wrestling champion from Haryana, whose successful career has created a rift in his personal life. The film was released worldwide on July 6, 2016. It grossed ₹623.33 crore ($91 million) worldwide, and was one of the top five Indian films ever. Plot Sultan Ali Khan is a middle-aged Jat pehlwani wrestler and ex-fight champion who lives a lonely life in a small town in Haryana. Akash Oberoi, founder of the private mixed martial arts league backed by Mr. Patel, encouraged his father to recruit Sultan to salvage the league's popularity. After a trip to Haryana, he proposes to Sultan, who expressly refuses and says that he has completely left the fight. In search of the reason for his resignation, Akash confronts a close friend of Sultan Govind, who tells about how the Sultan's career began. In 2008, Sultan falls in love with Aarfa Hussain, a state-level wrestler and daughter of a local wrestling coach. Although at first she is cold towards him, she accepts Sultan as a friend. When he begins to claim that they are committed, she insults him, saying that she will marry only a well- trained wrestler. Determined to win her respect, Sultan devotes himself to intensive training and eventually wins the state-level wrestling tournament as well as Aarfa. They marry and become recognized wrestlers representing India at various international tournaments. When they are selected for the Olympic contingent, Aarfa discovers that she is pregnant. She gives up her childhood dream of winning an Olympic gold medal for India, which is then performed by the Sultan. To her surprise, Sultan's achievement makes him arrogant, and he slaps a reporter at the event. It also leaves Aarfa approaching her deadline to win gold in Turkey. Returning, he discovers that his newborn son died of severe anemia. The baby had a rare O-blood, identical to Sultan's blood, the absence of which deprived the child of a donor. Outraged, Aarfa leave the Sultan and live with his father. Oppressed by the loss of his wife and child, Sultan begins a fundraiser to open a blood bank named after his son. Currently, Akash promises Sultan that the prize fund of the tournament will fulfill his dream of opening a blood bank. Sultan agrees to participate, and takes a train to Delhi, where Akash introduces him to MMA coach Fateh Singh, who initially abandons him but agrees after seeing his determination. After two months of training, Sultan regains his physique and learns to fight freestyle. In his first fight, sultan defeats his opponent, using his own cult style of wrestling. Soon he again becomes a national sensation, winning a series of matches and winning the support of Aarfa in the process. During the semifinal round, Sultan wins the fight but is seriously injured and must be hospitalized. The doctor informs Akash that Sultan should not fight again so that his injuries do not become fatal. Aarfa arrives in the ward and motivates him to continue fighting.
