As recently confirmed by the Institute of Medicine’s report on the Future of Nursing (The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Washington, D.C.: The National Academies Press, 2011), advanced practice nurses and doctorally prepared nurses are needed more now than ever. Increas- ingly, the focus of nursing is on community-based care aimed at enhancing the ability of individuals and families to decrease the risk of disease and complications of chronic con- ditions. The Yale School of Nursing master’s (M.S.N.) program prepares advanced prac- tice nurses to practice in today’s complex health care environment. Our program prepares nurse practitioners in multiple specialties, nurse-midwives, and leaders in management and policy. The Ph.D. program prepares nurse scientists to conduct clinical research to add to the evidence base for nursing practice and to serve as the next generation of faculty, and the new Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program will support the continued development of advanced practitioners who wish to expand their influence in the delivery of health care, through leadership, management, and participation in interdisciplinary policy and politics. The postdoctoral training program builds on doctoral study to help nurse scientists move toward independent academic and research careers. Established in 1923, the Yale School of Nursing was the first school of nursing to be based in a university and the first to emphasize the integration of science with the art of care. Since that time, the School has enjoyed a national and international reputation for excellence in education, research, and clinical practice. Our graduates have gone on to assume positions of leadership around the world. The School’s educational programs are consistently ranked in the top five for clinical education, and the School ranks in the top tier in funding from the National Institutes of Health to nursing schools for research. The research-intensive environment of Yale University, with its full range of academic disci- plines, provides an exceptional environment for advanced study in nursing. Our position as part of one of the great health care centers in the world assures that our students will have access to extraordinary clinical sites. We are a diverse community of scholars committed to “better health for all people.” The faculty, sta≠, and I look forward to welcoming you to Yale and to sharing our School with you.
