Newfound Water Quality Sampling: 2010-2011

Newfound Water Quality Sampling: • In Lake Sampling – 8 Historic Sampling locations – Initial Sampling in 1986 – Standard Measurements include: Total Phosphorus, Chlorophyll and Secchi Disk Transparency – Determine long‐term trends, identify threats to the lake – Near‐Shore sampling and periphyton sampling to screen for “hot” spots. • Headwater Tributary Sampling – Expansion of 2006‐2007 Water/Nutrient Budget – 6 Major Sub‐watersheds sampled: Black Brook, Cockermouth River, Dick Brown Brook, Georges Brook, Fowler River and Whittemore Brook – Emphasis on the collection of Total Phosphorus, Turbidity and Specific Conductivity data. Phosphorus and Algal Growth Phosphorus • Limiting Nutrient for Most Fresh Waters • Tend to be “sticky” so is transported by sediments and other matter 10/1/2013 Newfound Lake Areal Phosphorus Load by Tributary Sub-watershed Kendall Brook 0.03 Hebron Brook 0.03 The Ledges Brook 0.04 Wilson Brook 0.04 Mason Brook 0.04 Barn Brook 0.06 Cockermouth River 0.06 Tilton Brook 0.06 Cashman Brook 0.06 Site Georges Brook 0.07 Fowler River 0.07 Yellow Brook 0.08 Hemlock Brook 0.08 Post Office Brook 0.08 Whittemore Brook 0.08 Dick Brown Brook 0.09 Black Brook 0.10 Wellington Brook 0.12 0.00 0.02 0.04 0.06 0.08 0.10 0.12 0.14 Areal Phosphorus Load (Kg/Ha/Yr) Water Quality Sampling Stations And Catchment Watersheds Newfound 30 28 o C) ( 26 24 (June Periphyton 22 Temperature 20 17, 18 2008 16 14 Study ‐ 12 September 10 water 6/17/2008 6/24/2008 24, Temperatures 7/1/2008 2008) 7/8/2008 7/15/2008 Beachwood 7/22/2008 7/29/2008 8/5/2008 Fowler 8/12/2008 8/19/2008 Hemlock 8/26/2008 9/2/2008 9/9/2008 Hebron 9/16/2008 9/23/2008 2008 Periphyton Inter-site comparison 18 16 ) 2 14 12 (mg/m 10 a 8 6 4 chlorophyll 2 0 P-3 Beach P-4 Fowler P-5 Hemlock P-7 Hebron Date 22-Jul-08 14-Aug-08 26-Aug-08 24-Sep-08 Summary: • Overall in‐lake water quality is excellent while localized water quality variations are evident. • Threats exist • Long‐term trend of increasing chlorophyll and decreasing Secchi Disk transparency at 2 Mayhew and Site 3 Pasquaney Bay • Major water quality fluctuations have been associated with episodic precipitation events. • Phosphorus tends to enter the lake in a particulate form based historical data. .
