We are grateful that Alessandra Marc was available to replace Ms. Orgonasova at short notice. Alessandra Marc Making her Boston Symphony subscription series debut this week, the German-born American dramatic soprano Alessandra Marc is acclaimed internationally for her work in opera and in concert. Ms. Marc's 1998-99 season included performances in Berlin of Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs with conductor Christian Thielemann; Mahler's Eighth Symphony in Vienna and in London; Sieglinde in Act I of Die Walkiire and the final scene of Strauss's Salome with Giuseppe Sinopoli and the Dresden Staatskapelle at Carnegie Hall; and the title role in Puccini's Turandot in Milwaukee and Michigan. Last season also brought her first performances of Agathe in Weber's Der Freischiitz, in Paris; Briinnhilde's Immolation Scene from Gotterdammerung with the New Jersey Symphony; Brunnhilde in Die Walkiire in concert performances at the Rome Opera with Sinopoli; and the title role in Strauss's Elektra in concert performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Future projects include Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and in Israel; Verdi's Requiem in Rome, London, and Parma; and the Empress in Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Highlights of past seasons have included debuts with the Royal Opera and Opera-Bastille in the title role of Turandot; Sieglinde in Barcelona and Sydney; Ariadne aufNaxos in Munich; Mahler's Second Symphony under Lorin Maazel in Munich; Zemlinsky's Lyric Sym- phony with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and Schoenberg's Erzvartung in Vienna. She has sung the title role of Verdi's Aida for her debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Vienna State Opera, Bonn Opera, and in Israel. Among her recordings are an aria album entitled "American Diva"; Strauss's Elektra and Schoenberg's Erzvartung with Giuseppe Sinopoli; Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony with Riccardo Chailly; Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and two recordings of Mahler's Symphony No. 8. Future releases include Berg's Altenberg Lieder and the Lulu Suite with Sinopoli; the closing scene of Salome with Donald Runnicles; and Maria in Strauss's Friedenstag with Sinopoli and the Dresden Staatskapelle. Alessandra Marc made her Boston Symphony debut in August 1994 at Tanglewood, in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach. Week 2.
