ACADEMIC HISTORY RESEARCH ENDEAVOURS Ethnic conflict in Belgium and Canada, as reflected in divisions within major political parties (Ph.D. dissertation research) (l972-75) Investigation of ethnicity, social class, and gender in Glengarry County, Ontario, eventually narrowed to a study of the town of Alexandria (1978-89). The development of gay political movements in North America and Western Europe, and the 2 nature of legislative responses to calls for reform. A variety of small research endeavors resulting in papers and articles (l984- ) Patterns of public attitudes and social norms about homosexuality in Canada, Britain, and the U.S. An investigation into public opinion polls, survey analyses, and historical commentaries, chronicling shifts in public perspectives, and analyzing their roots in the late nineteenth century (l986-88). AIDS policy in Canada, co-investigated with Evert Lindquist (Dept. of Pol. Science, U. of T.), producing three manuscript articles/chapters to 1991. The place of sexual diversity issues on political agendas in Canada, Britain, and the U.S., including an examination of the role of openly-gay national legislators, and of the overall relationship between gay/lesbian social movements and mainstream politics (1992-98) The role of European labour unions in raising sexual orientation issues and defending the rights of sexual minorities.
