Digilink, tvLINK, SLXlink, Triax Link, SmartEye etc. Installation information The SkyLink does not need to be connected to a TV set in order to send your remote control signals back to your Sky Digibox. (For example, it can be used as a simple remote extender if your Digibox is in a cabinet.) However, it must be connected to your TV set if you want Sky picture and sound on that TV. The SkyLink device passes the RF signal through without affecting it. In any case, the SkyLink module should never be connected directly to a horizontally-mounted TV aerial socket as the strain could damage the socket and/or SkyLink. You should use a length of double-screened cable to connect the SkyLink to the TV aerial socket if the module doesn’t have its own flexible lead. It may need to be “decoupled” (see below).* See this page for more details of double-screened “fly-leads”:- SatCure can supply ready-made leads with plugs fitted, if required:- As some TV sets radiate interference, which might interfere with the operation of the SkyLink, you may need to position the device away from the TV. In the case of some large screen TV sets, a distance of up to three metres may be required. Please bear this in mind if your SkyLink does not work reliably. If your Sky RF Outlet signal passes through any amplifier, splitter or wall socket, these units must be SkyLink compatible, otherwise reliable operation may be impossible to achieve. * Some TV sets prevent the operation of the SkyLink when connected to the aerial socket. If you have a problem, see if the SkyLink works when disconnected from the TV set. If it does, then you may need to “decouple” it. See this page:- Some SkyLink devices use an ‘F’ connector plug. For details of ‘F’ connectors, please see this page:- The SkyLink must be connected via double-screened coaxial cable with soldered plugs to the RF2 Outlet on your Sky Digibox. All Sky Digiboxes (Standard, Sky-plus and Sky-HD) are theoretically compatible with all SkyLink devices. In practice, however, variations in tolerances can cause unreliable operation with some combinations and with some cable lengths. However, before blaming the SkyLink device, please follow our troubleshooting instructions on the following pages. The Sky Digibox RF2 Outlet power must be set to ON in the on-screen menu. To access this secret Installer Menu, connect your main TV set to the Sky Digibox with a Scart lead (if not already so.) Make sure you can see a Sky programme. Press the following sequence quickly on your Sky remote control: [services] 401 [select] (or [services] 001 [select] in later HD EPG). Then press 4 to access the RF Outlet menu. Set the RF Outlet power to ON and set the UHF channel to an unused channel between 21 and 69. Save the settings then press [backup] repeatedly until you see the picture on your main TV. Tune your secondary TV set to the same UHF number (or find it by autoscanning in the TV menu). Note that some TV sets can not tune to 69. If you see intererference or a grainy Sky picture on your secondary TV, you have chosen a UHF channel number that is already in use. Return to the secret Installer menu and try a different number. Digilink, tvLINK, SLXlink, Triax Link, SmartEye etc. Troubleshooting information IMPORTANT NOTE Some Sky Digiboxes have problems with specific conditions of cable length and "discontinu- ities" caused by additional connections (in-line connectors, wall plates, Y-splitters, amplifiers). In many cases the solution is as simple as adding an extra metre of cable somewhere in the run. In other cases, the specific configuration will work only with a different Digibox. If you contact SatCure Technical about a problem with one of these units you must include the following information in your email message to SATCURE TECHNICAL: 1. Your original “SAT” order number from the shopping cart that you received by email. 2. A statement that you have read the following TROUBLESHOOTING NOTES. 3. Brief details of your system and connections. We may ask you to provide a sketch by email. This should be provided as a GIF image please or a PDF file. 4. Details of the checks on the following pages, with a note stating at which check the unit failed to give the required result. 5. The fault history - if the unit has been in service for some time we need to know the events leading up to failure. If your ADSL connection stops working when you connect the magic eye to your TV set, you need to modify the cable. Please refer to the notes here: Troubleshooting isn't too difficult when you understand that the "eye" requires a 9 volt DC supply from the Digibox (or from an amplifier) and also sends an RF signal back to the Digibox. Anything that blocks DC on the way out or blocks (or interferes with) RF on the way back, will prevent reliable operation. Hence the need for good connections and screen- ing of everything. Since the "eye" itself can't be screened, keep it well away from the TV set and other sources of interference. These notes are copyright ©2008 SatCure and may not be sold or given away in any form. Updated April 30, 2009 Page 3 Digilink, tvLINK, SLXlink, Triax Link etc. troubleshooting information Occasionally we get customers complaining that these units don’t work. Invariably it’s because they don’t understand how the devices work. In order to help you, we’ve set out a procedure for checking the unit. Please follow these instructions carefully and you will be able to locate the cause of your problem: 1. Switch your Digibox OFF at the wall socket. Gently connect your “link” directly to “RF Output 2” (RF2) at the rear of your Digibox. (The “link” socket is female to match the male RF2 socket on the Digibox.) Do NOT press it too firmly because the socket is easily damaged when you pull to remove. Also the tvLINK is very prone to damage if you wiggle it while connected! Switch your Digibox ON at the wall socket and wait for it to reboot. 2. On your remote control handset press [services] 401 [select] quickly or press [services] 001 [select] quickly if you have the later HD EPG. The installer menu will appear on your TV screen. Press 4 (RF Outlets). The RF outlets menu will appear on your TV screen with “RF channel number” highlighted. Press the “down” button (usually located above [backup]) This will highlight “RF power supply”. Press the “right” button (usually located to the right of the [select] button). This will change “RF power supply OFF” to “RF power supply ON”. Press the “down” button again to highlight “Save new settings”. Press the [select] button to save them. You can now press the [backup] button several times until the picture appears. 3. Your “link” connection box or eye should now have an LED glowing. Did this happen? If NO: your link is not receiving power. Check that the Digibox RF power supply is ON by dis- connecting the “link” box (care- fully!) and using a multimeter to measure the voltage as shown. The reading should be between 8 and 9 volts DC with the nega- tive (black) probe touching the outside of RF2 and the positive (red) probe touching the inner pin. Be careful NOT to short-cir- cuit the inner pin to the outer sleeve or the Digibox will turn the voltage OFF and you will have to set it in the menu again. (It will still say “ON” but it will not reset until you view the menu). See “How to use a multimeter”: If the voltage is not correct, your Digibox is faulty. If you are certain the the voltage is correct but your “link” is not lighting its LED, the “link” is faulty. Contact Sales for a replacement. If YES: your “link” is receiving power from the Digibox. 4. Point your remote control handset at the “link” eye and press SKY then any button. The LED on the “link” should flicker and your Digibox should respond to the button presses. Now disconnect the “link” box and Cover the Digibox front panel. Point the remote at the “link” eye and make sure that the Digibox does NOT respond. With the front panel still covered, reconnect the “link” box to RF2 and try the remote again. The Digibox should respond. Did this happen? If NO: Your Digibox may be faulty. TEST YOUR LINK AT A FRIEND’S HOUSE. If it doesn’t work there then your “link” is faulty. Read page 3 again. If YES: your “link” is working. Your problem cause lies elsewhere. 5. You can check as follows: Connect your “link” to a short coaxial RF lead with soldered plugs and attach that to the Digibox RF2. With the front panel still covered, test the “eye” by pressing SKY then any but- tons on the remote control.
