This was the first census of Maharashtra and everyone was inspired by an appeal to make it a success. A large share of the credit for the success ot the Census goes to the District Census Officers (Personal Assistants to Collectors now called Resident Deputy Collectors), the Tahsildars, Mamlatdars and Municipal Officers who worked as Charge Officers and the subordinate staff of the Revenue Department and Municipalities who did strenuous work for the Census in addition to their normal duties. I am obliged to them all. I wish to express my obligations to Shri N. T. Mone, I.C.S., Chief Secretary and Shri D. R. Pradhan, I.C.S., Revenue Secretary to the Govern­ ment of Maharashtra, but for whose guidance and support the Census could not have been conducted so smoothly. I would like to thank Shri M. A. Telang, Director, Bureau of Economics and Statistips, Government of Maharashtra, for his excellent co-operation at all stages. I am deeply indebted to Shri Asok Mitra, I.C.S., Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, whose experienced handling of the 1961 Census operations made our roles at the State level less arduous than those in the previous Censuses. His affection gave us strength and confidence. His­ devotion to work was always inspiring. I am grateful to Shri D. Natarajan, Deputy Registrar General, who was always sympathetic and helpful in all administrative and technical matters. I am also thankful to Shri K. D. Ballal, Central Tabulation Officer and his staff who very kindly checked the material for accuracy and made useful suggestions for improvement of this volume. Its reference date, fixed as sunrise follow entries for Bombay Division and its districts; of 1st March 1961, approximated the completion of the then Poona Division and its districts; and so on.
