The district is predominantly mountainous with deep valleys. Longest length from west to east is 77 kms. and the maximum width from north to south is 80 kms. The district is bounded by Shimla district in the north, Uttarakhand in the east, Yamuna Nagar district of Haryana in the southwest and Solan district in the north-west.
