A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum Based on ancient Roman playwright Plautus' farces Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum tells the outrageous story of a Roman slave named Pseudolus and his wild attempts to obtain his freedom. He sees his chance by helping his young master, Hero, gain the attention of the mysterious girl next door, Philia. There is one problem: Philia is a courtesan from the House of Marcus Lycus, and she is already owned by the renowned soldier Captain Miles Gloriosus. If Pseudolus can figure out a way for Hero to wed the fair Philia, he will gain his freedom. This won't be easy but it will be hilarious as Pseudolus' machinations include mistaken identity, door slamming, slaps, kicks to the derriere, and a few cross-dressing courtesans! A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum made its Broadway debut on May 8, 1962 at the Alvin Theatre. It closed in 1964 after 964 performances, and has enjoyed several Broadway revivals since then. Produced by Harold Prince Although the lead role of Pseudolus was originally played by Zero Mostel, its creators had intended the role to go to Phil Silvers, who turned down the role after reading the script and deciding it wouldn't go anywhere. Silvers did eventually take up the role during the 1972 revival and was awarded the Best Actor Tony Award for his portrayal. Pseudolus has since been played by such notable actors as Nathan Lane (The Birdcage, The Producers, Guys and Dolls) and EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Act, The Color Purple, The Lion King.)
