Rosie Tebbutt th Newsletter 16 March 2018 The last couple of weeks have been very busy at Netley Abbey Junior School as we recently celebrated World Book Day, all classes have visited the Life Bus which has been stationed in our playground, Year 3 served tea and cake to older members of the community and there have been many sports competitions. It was also Parents’ Evening this week. It was great to see so many parents here on Wednesday and Thursday. It is always a pleasure to inform you of your child’s achievements and areas to develop next. In the next few weeks we are looking forward to the Lower School music concerts, so please make sure you have the dates in your diary. Year 3 will be going to Butser Ancient Farm and The Friends are holding a Community Quiz night which I am sure will be very enjoyable. Dogs We have had an incident this morning where a child was bitten by an unattended dog at the school gate. We must ask that you do not leave your dog tied up on the fence at the entrance to the school whilst you take your child into the playground, please either say goodbye to your child at the gate or leave your dog at home. Thank you for your co -operation Dinner and Trip Money Please can we request that all money handed into the school for dinners, trips etc. is put into a named envelope . Thank you World Book Day On Tuesday 6th March, we celebrated World Book Day. As well as taking part in book themed activities during school time, the children and staff were invited to come into school dressed as a character from their favourite ‘Out of this world’ book. It was inspiring to see so many children taking part and sharing their love for reading. I would like to extend an especially big thank you to the incredible amount of parents who helped the children to create a home-made costume this year. Emma Blundell - English Manager Be the best you can be! Lower School Music Concerts - Spring Term Please see below for the dates of your child’s music concert. Thursday 22 nd March at 2pm - Recorder Concert (Seaview and Westwood) Thursday 29 th March at 9.15am - Samba Concert (Denzil and Castle) Thursday 29 th March at 2pm - Keyboard Concert (Grange and Priory) For the afternoon concerts only - if you would like to take your child home after the concert they must be signed out at reception, as long as the adult collecting them is on the contact list. If they are not, please let the office know in advance, the name of the person collecting them. Roman Experience Day - Year 4 Boasting no less than 6 different characters, played by two actors, the day was full of excitement and packed full of historical facts. The children were first treated to a performance in which they were encouraged to participate. Groups of children were invited up onto the stage to create Roman roads, central heating, teach some Latin and become Roman soldiers and Celtic slaves. This was followed by a lesson on how to act on the stage like a professional. This culminated in a final performance led by the children themselves! In small groups, children were given a Roman scenario (battle, banquet or road building), which they had to create a scene using the information they had learnt that morning. The results were magnificent! Not only had the children learnt huge amounts about how the Romans lived and acted, but the children gained confidence to perform in front of others and developed their team work skills. Mrs J Botma Year 4 Teacher Special Mentions Over the last few weeks our school value has focused on ‘Self Knowledge’. Congratulations to the following children who were all awarded a Special Mention. Archie Kitching (Denzil) Michael Draper (Sellwood) Liam West (Moore) Maddox Estill-Richardson (Crescent) Toni Baker (Grange) Summer Andrews (Westwood) Xing Su (Seaview) Jessica Jobling (Castle) Kieran McCormick (Beach) Tilly Gouch (Heath) Evan Joliffe (Priory) Jake Martin (Wykeham) Year 3 Email Year 3 are starting to learn about sending and receiving email and, of course, keeping safe whilst doing so. Our school email system is actually set up so the children can only send and receive within our NAJS domain, meaning they cannot send or receive to anyone outside of the school. They can log in to their email wherever they have an internet connection but will be told not to do so at home before speaking to their parents or carers. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Bethan Davis Specialist Computing Teacher Courteous Parking in the Neighbourhood We would like to remind parents about parking courteously in the neighbourhood. There has been an increase in people parking in front of dropped kerbs and restricting access to residents’ property. We would also like to remind parents not to park on kerbs, as this restricts the space for pedestrians. Thank you for your co-operation Increase in School Meal Price Please be aware there will be an increase in the school meal price from £2.15 to £2.30 with effect from 1st September 2018. Thank you Pupil Voice This section is written by groups of children within our school and the following report is about what the children in Year 6 have been learning. Kieran McCormick We have been learning about decimals and fractions in maths which was a new skill for our SATs. In English, we have been learning about Ernest Shackleton and all the people who went on the expedition to cross the South Pole. We have been writing a job application to him (only 24 applicants out of 5000 got the job!). We have also been looking at Ancient medicines in history including the Greeks, Romans, Tudors and Egyptians. Bradleigh Morgan I have been learning about medicines through time in history which has been very interesting. I am also learning about Shackleton’s Journey across the South Pole and about who went on this journey. I have also enjoyed doing orienteering in PE, using map skills as well as endurance. Daniel Lawn In PE, we have been doing orienteering where up to 20 cones are hidden and we have to use a map of the school to find them. This has been really fun and different. In English, I have enjoyed learning about a book called Shackleton’s Journey. We have written a character description and a job application to see if we would get a job on his boat! In addition to this, we have just finished our Mock SATs week to help us with our real SATs in May. Kayla Harvey In year 6, we have been focusing on our SATs by doing a mock SATs week. We have done a SPaG test, an arithmetic test and two reasoning papers as well as a reading test. To prepare us, we have been working hard in class such as on our word problem skills in maths. As well as this, we have been having fun in PE - we have been learning orienteering skills. Sophie Nowell In class, we have been reading a book called Shackleton’s Journey. We have recently written a letter to persuade him to give the character we have chosen a job on the ship. We have also been working hard in maths to convert different measures. This is sometimes tricky, but important learning for us! I have really enjoyed our PE recently where we have been getting into teams to complete an orienteering course. We put various cones out and then use a map to find them all. Ashleigh Elphinstone Here in Year 6, in Beach class, we have been doing something called Shackleton’s Journey in English. Right now, we are writing an application for a job advert that he actually sent out at the time! Lucy Shazell In history, we have been learning about medicine through time. We have looked at cures from the Ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, the Middle Ages, the Tudors and many more. I have learnt a lot about what not to use for medicine anymore! Polly Staddon In our class, we’ve been learning all kinds of things such as: Shackleton’s journey and have been introduced to all the people on board the ship; we’ve started looking at the Black Death and the symptoms in history; and in PE, we’ve been doing orienteering. This is when we get the chance to find cones with signs on them and I just love racing around everywhere, collecting the symbols. Sports News th Cluster Qualifier Basketball at Wildern School - 9 January 2018 We attended the basketball competition, many as novices and for some it was their first time representing the school. The team showed great progress, resilience and gained confidence with each match played. The team finished 5th in their group. The team: Dylan Birks, Mia Bundy, Lexie Eldridge, Samuel Jolliffe, Bethan Ronan, Ben Vargeson and Edward Woodward. Cluster Qualifier Hockey at The Hamble School - 23 rd January 2018 We won our group and went onto play Freegrounds (the only team we had lost against in our group) in the finals but unfortunately we lost to them again! However, as runners up we have secured a place to represent South Eastleigh and Winchester in the Hampshire Games, which will be held in Aldershot on the 21 st June 2018.
