While watching the story of El Paso’s medical school unfold, I have logged thousands of hours in the presence of individuals whose Leaders hearts and minds were reluctant to face the odds, yet rather focus on the possibilities – and the work at hand . This not only includes our most visible supporters and donors, but specifically each member of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center faculty and staff that have made this institution a valuable part of the El Paso community for almost 35 years . With humble beginnings within the corridors of Thomason Hospital, we have grown to heights that still leave some silent with pride . Not only have we emerged as a thriving health sciences center, but also the only accredited four-year medical school on the U S. /Mexico. border – preparing to seat its first class in 2009 . Baldwin, M.D. 2 A place where dreams begin Governor Rick Perry arrived on the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus on June 12, 2007 to attend a ceremonial signing for higher education legislation and celebrate the passage of the bill that provided $48 million in startup funds for the full, four-year El Paso School of Medicine . Perry officially signed the budget on June 15, approving the medical school funding that enabled the El Paso School of Medicine to hire the necessary faculty and proceed with the accreditation process to seat the first four-year medical school class in 2009 . Governor David Dewhurst expressed his continued support of the TTUHSC Paul L. Foster School of Medicine on September 20, 2007, after completing a tour of Medical Science Building I and the Medical Education Building. “I pledge to you my continued support to grow this medical school,” said Dewhurst. During the 80th Legislative Session, Dewhurst secured $48 million in the 2008-2009 state budget to fund faculty for Texas’ first four-year medical school in 30 years.
