New Manual of the Vascular Plants

New Manual of the Vascular Plants

NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN New Manual of Vascular Plants Project by New York Botanical Garden New Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada is a project by New York Botanical Garden to publish a completely new floristic guide for the Northeast. The New Manual advances the legacy of manuals on the Northeast by NYBG authors, first written in 1901 by NYBG Founding Director Nathaniel Lord Britton, and most recently by Henry Gleason and Arthur Cronquist in 1991. Dr. Robert Naczi, Curator of North American Botany at NYBG, leads the New Manual project. He coordinates a team of international experts to produce cutting-edge treatments incorporating the latest advances in botanical science. The chief goal of the New Manual is to enable users to identify all native and introduced plants growing spontaneously in a vast region: portions or the entirety of 22 states and 5 Canadian provinces. With many changes since 1991 in plant names, classifications, and geographic distributions (especially the increase in non-native species), a new manual is much needed. In addition to identification tools, the New Manual provides information on physical appearance, habitats, blooming seasons, geographic distributions, etymologies of scientific names, related literature, and conservation status for each species. The New Manual is vitally important to all those interested in America’s rich botanical resources, especially students, conservationists, wildlife managers, educators, and gardeners. Since releasing its first New Manual publications in 2016, NYBG Press has published 93 chapters (list below, each covering a family, partial family [Cyperaceae], or multiple families [ferns]). These chapters treat 1,500 of the estimated 5,300 species that occur in the region of coverage. The total number of species in the New Manual region amounts to 25% of the botanical diversity of North America north of Mexico. Treatments published so far include such economically and ecologically important groups as the ferns, gentians, orchids, poppies, and roses. These chapters are published only in digital format. The complete New Manual will be available both digitally and in hard copy. In an era of global change, including rapid floristic change, the New Manual is a one- stop, indispensable reference on the plant life of the northeastern U.S. and adjacent Canada. Chapters can be purchased from the New York Botanical Garden Press.
