Following an underutilization by President Harry S. Truman, the NSC became the hub of policy planning under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower realized the importance of the NSC’s work and depended on the council to effect major policy decisions. Eisenhower integrated many civilian and military advisers into the NSC, including leaders of industry, military officers, and publishers. Produced during the cold war, some documents contain phrases and terms that are uncommon today. It is important to consider that the quest for U.S. supremacy over the Soviet Union pervaded almost every government decision. Due to this influence, the collection contains numerous terms and phrases unfamiliar to many readers. Economic defense, for example, appears multiple times in this collection and refers to the preservation of the economic stability of the nation. Economic defense is closely related to national or continental defense; the former refers to the overall defense of the nation and the latter only to the defense of the actual land mass. The documents found in this collection, The Dwight D. Eisenhower National Security Files, 1953–1961, Part 3: Correspondence Files, contain many examples of the administrative and logistical support necessary to maintain an effective advisory committee. Starting in 1953, the collection contains agendas and minutes of individual NSC meetings as compiled by Robert Cutler, the first national security adviser. The collection also contains documents from Dillon Anderson and Gordon Gray, the successive advisers. Contained in these notes and agendas are discussions of the official foreign policy of the United States. Many documents are simply administrative,
