I HISTORY OF THE FAMILY NP.ME ''BROWN" 2 The origin of the surname "Brown" was English. I' At the period when the growth of the population de manded something more than a given name to distin guish one 'individual from another, there were many dark-complexioned persons who were known as "John . le Brun", or "Wymore le Broune ", and these word.s came to distinguish their children as well as themselves, though many of the children may have been blonds. Thus the name "Brown" means brown. The name has many orthographic peculiarities. Browning was the son of Brown; Brownell was the mighty Brown; Brownlee the Brown who lived in a pasture; Brownlow, the Brown who lived on a hill. Varlous forms a.re: Boown, Bown, Bra.um, Brouun, Brow:r;i.e., Borwnn, Brune, Brune, Brownson, Bronson, Broune, Brunnell and . Burnett. The name Brown is of frequent oecurrance in early New.England records. One hundred and twenty severi Browns emigrated to America before 1700. over thirteen hundred, a regiment by themselves, served in the Revolution from Massachusetts alone. According to the Herald1 s College, England, the Browns have . been grante~ one hundred fifty-six coats-of-arms. The name has been borne in the United States by men \ ., of mark in law,. politics., business .and letters •. 2a DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM BROWN OF BLANDFORD MASS ./ Agnes b 1728 m 1754* John Beard William b 1731 m 1757-See chart page 2b for d.esc- Nancy King enda.nts ·1n.cluding ROBERT the subject of this record.
