Music Preferences in the U.S.: 1982-2002 Lee Mizell with Brett Crawford and Caryn Anderson Prepared for the National Endowment for the Arts Updated June 2005 PREFACE This report was contracted by the National Endowment for the Arts (C02-91) to describe music preferences in the U.S. and how they have changed over time. The report describes the relationship between key demographic characteristics and music preferences. This study should be of interest to any reader who is a little curious to find out what type of music is likely to be playing on the radios, CD players, or iPods of adults in his or her community. The report should also be useful to educators, researchers, and music industry personnel who are invested in knowing who listens to what.
