For a Culture of Innovation Series curated by Mimma Gallina (Associazione Culturale Ateatro), Oliviero Ponte di Pino (Associazione Culturale Ateatro). The transformations in society, technology and communication have a decisive impact on live performance and on its functions, as well as on its creative, organisational and production methods. New developments are emerging in this fast changing scenario thanks to many factors, among which the inter- twining of arts, media and cultures, the evolution of the relationship between culture, politics and citizens, the transformation of urban spaces and places of creativity, and the appearance of new audiences. Theatre and the performing arts, especially in their most innovative expressions, have always offered a key to understanding and a tool for confronting the changes in our personal and collective identities. These comprehensive, state-of-the-art volumes, with an international outlook, rich in data but also in ideas and practical suggestions, identify and analyse ground-breaking trends in the world of entertainment, without forgetting that theatre and culture are the memory of the future. The terms Animazione teatrale (theatre animation), Nuovo teatro (new theatre), Teatro sociale d’arte (artistic social theatre) and Teatro sociale di comunità (social community theatre) are quoted in Italian because they indicate experiences and definitions used in Italy and which do not have an exact equivalent in English. Animazione teatrale is a cultural movement developed in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s. Through play, theatre, feasts and every form of art, it aimed to promote a free, creative, social and political pedagogy at school, in the neigh- bourhoods and in every sphere of the life of children and young people. Nuovo teatro indicates all the artistic experiences which, since the second half of the 20th century, have revolutionised the forms of expression and the professional and organisational practices of the theatre, breaking with the past and affirming the intrinsic value of what is new.
