The Documentation Center is open every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 4 pm. Access: Researchers may request information by telephone, fax, on the Internet or by mail. The archivist will produce the documents requested by the researcher who will have access to the documentation center. On the website it states that research fees of $25.00 / hour are applicable but does not apply necessarily to all requests. It would be good for researcher to inquire about costs prior to their requests for archival documents. My experience was that they were extremely helpful and retrieved an article I requested at no cost. General Description of Archival Holdings: THE C.R.H.A. ARCHIVES includes over 100 archival fonds and collections from railway companies such as the CN, the CP and the Grand Trunk, from manufacturers, MLW and CC&F among others, and from prominent men like Charles Melville Hays and William Cornelius Van Horne. The archives contain over 144,000 plans, 180,000 photographs, 257 linear meter of textual documents, totalling more than a quarter of a million documents of all description. *The description of the Archival Fonds and Collections of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association has been established according to the Rules for Archival Description (RAD). The description remains uniform in order to facilitate research and reading. For the purposes of the university resource list I have noted some of the documentation that might be of interest to a public working class researcher. GUIDE TO THE FONDS AND COLLECTION OF THE ARCHIVES - 1998 1 CA001 Margolese collection. (Collection of postcards of American and Canadian trains) CA003 Greenwald Collection (passes for trains between the years of 1859 – 1985) CA006 Robert R. Brown Collection (Canadian and British locomotives) PA001 Montreal Locomotive Works fonds. - 1904-1951. Administrative history: The Montreal Locomotive Works commenced activities in 1902 under the name of Locomotive and Machine Company of Montreal Ltd. In 1904 the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady New York (ALCO), which manufactured steam locomotives in several plants in North America, bought the Montreal plant. In 1908 the name was changed to The Montreal Locomotive Works Limited (MLW). In 1904 this plant produced the first steam locomotive in Montreal. In 1948, the original company was amalgamated with General Electric to manufacture diesel-electric locomotives. Montreal Locomotive Works was subsequently acquired by Bombardier. After ALCO purchased the plant, the primary mandate of Montreal Locomotive Works became the manufacture of steam locomotives for the North American market, as well as the world market. Scope and content: The fonds show the evolution of steam locomotives as built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in Montreal between 1904 and 1951. The fonds also includes documents from other ALCO plants, including Brooks, Cooke, Dickson, Manchester, Pittsburg, Rhode Island, Richmond, Rogers and Schenectady. The fonds shows the complete assembly process for steam locomotives. The fonds contains the technical specifications for each order, with drawing lists, drawings, layouts, photographs and negatives of various types of locomotives at various stages of assembly. Physical description: 10000 engineering and technical drawings. - 550 photographs: black & white negatives - 67 photo albums - 5 m of textual materials. PA002 Bombardier fonds. - 1925-1981. Administrative history: The American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, New York (ALCO), manufactured locomotives in several plants in North America commencing in 1842. In 1904 it bought a manufacturing plant in Montreal, known as Locomotive and Machine Co. of Montreal, Ltd., which become the Montreal Locomotive Works Limited (MLW). In 1904 this plant produced the first steam locomotive in Montreal. In 1948, the plant was amalgamated with General Electric to manufacture diesel-electric locomotives. Bombardier acquired the plant in 1975 and resold it to General Electric in 1989. Scope and content : The Bombardier fonds shows the evolution of diesel-electric locomotives manufactured by Montreal Locomotive Works in Montreal, as well as the Schenectady shops of the American Locomotive Company in the United States, between 1948 and 1964. Both were taken over by Bombardier between 1975 and 1989. The fonds illustrate the complete process for assembly of a locomotive. The fonds also include some documents on railway cars, accidents and urban transit rolling stock.The fonds consist mainly of technical 2 drawings, order books, photographs and negatives. Physical description : 34000 engineering and technical drawings - 10 m textual materials. - 1000 photographs: black and white negatives and nitrate. PA003 James Plomer fonds. - 1901-1986; especially 1940-1980. (Photographer of trains, published in Blount-Richardson's book entitled Along the Iron Trail. He was also a member of a number of railway associations around the world, including the Canadian Railroad Historical Association. With Alan R. Capon, he co-authored the book Desperate Venture/ Central Ontario Railway, published in 1979.)A few photographs have been torn since their arrival. The documents in the fonds are mostly in English. There is a rough inventory of the contents of the boxes. PA005 Canadian Pacific Railway Navigation Department fonds. - 1881-1937. Scope and content : The Canadian Pacific Railway Navigation Department fonds show the operation of the department under Henry Beatty's direction between 1881 and 1914. The fonds consist of the registers of 4000 letters sent by Henry Beatty and operations registers from 1890 to 1892. Physical description: 1 m of textual materials. PA006 Canadian Pacific Railway Passenger Department fonds. (photographs, brochures, postcards, menus, train schedules and company publications dealing with colonization and tourism – 1850-1952 PA007 Mable Elizabeth Bevington. (One of the founding members of the Canadian Railway Historical Association in 1932 deals with locomotives in late 19th century) PA008 Charles Bowman fonds. (Photographer left over 3000 photographs: also negatives. - 2000 photographs: slides. - 13 films: super-8 home movies. - 35 sound items: sound recordings, home and commercial.) PA009 Canadian Car & Foundry fonds. (Once the largest Canadian manufacturer of freight cars, passenger cars and tramways.) PA012 Charles Melville Hays fonds. - 1878-1941. Scope and content : The fonds relates to the relationships between Charles Melville Hays and his family, the administration of the Wabash St. Louis & Pacific Railway and of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The fonds also deal with the sinking of the Titanic.This fonds includes correspondence, registers of letters, press clippings, a diary and photographs. Physical description : 0.6 m textual materials. 3 photograph albums. Charles Melville Hays was born 16 May 1856 at Rock Island, Illinois, and married Clara Gregg. They had four daughters Louise, Clara, Marjorie and Orin. He died tragically on the Titanic on 15 April 1912.Hays began his railway career at 17 with the Passenger Department of the Atlantic and Pacific Railway (Saint-Louis, Missouri). In 1884 he became secretary to the General Manager of the Wabash St. Louis & Pacific Railway. In 1889 he became General 3 Manager and five years later, Vice-President. In 1896 he was made General Manager of the Grand Trunk Railway, becoming President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1905. He was also a director of the Royal Trust Company and a director of the Merchants Bank.Founding member of the Mount Royal Club, of the St. James Club, the Canada Club, the Hunt Club and other Toronto social clubs. PA014 John Loye fonds. Scope and content : The John Loye fonds illustrates railway history in Canada from its beginnings until 1955. The fonds include many stories written for newspapers on the history of Montreal and the railway. The fonds also relates to various railway companies at the end of the 19th century, including the Champlain & St. Lawrence Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. The fonds also includes correspondence with researchers, amongst them the Pangborn family. He designed the Association's logo. The fonds consists of historical files, press clippings, correspondence, maps, technical and non-technical drawings, train schedules, an album of photographs on the Delaware & Hudson and a few photographs of the last remnants of the first railway near La Prairie. Includes a collection of postcards relating to world architecture and the railway. Physical description : 2 m textual materials. - 1067 postcards. - 1 photograph album. PA015 Robert Van Vleit Nicholls. (President of Historical Association 1961-1972) PA016 Paige fonds. Mr. H.W. Paige was a locomotive engineer for the Orford Mountain Railway and he also worked on construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1894 and 1912. Scope and content: The Paige fonds shows construction and rolling stock of the Orford Mountain Railway, a division of the Canadian Pacific Railway, between 1894 and 1912.
