Documentation of Statistics in the “Israel-Palestine Scorecard” 1. Population Displacement The 1967 Palestinian exodus refers to the flight of around 280,000 to 325,000 Palestinians[a] out of the territories taken by Israel during and in the aftermath of the Six-Day War, including the demolition of the Palestinian villages of Imwas, Yalo, and Bayt Nuba, Surit, Beit Awwa, Beit Mirsem, Shuyukh, Al-Jiftlik, Agarith and Huseirat and the "emptying" of the refugee camps of Aqabat Jaber and ʿEin as-Sultan.[b] aBowker, Robert P. Routledge. ISBN 0-7146-3091-8 cUN Doc A/8389 of 5 October 1971. Para 57. appearing in the Sunday Times (London) on 11 October 1970 2. Palestinian Land Annexed, Expropriated, or totally controlled by Israel Palestinian Loss of Land: 1967 - 2014 Since the 1993 Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Authority officially controls a geographically non-contiguous territory comprising approximately 11% of the West Bank (known as Area A) which remains subject to Israeli incursions. Area B (approx. 28%) is subject to joint Israeli-Palestinian military and Palestinian civil control. Area C (approx. 61%) is under full Israeli control. According to B'tselem, the vast majority of the Palestinian population lives in areas A and B and less than 1% of area C is designated for use by Palestinians, who are also unable to legally build in their own existing villages in area C due to Israeli authorities' restrictions. Area A is 250 square miles, Area B is 610 square miles, Area C is 1320 square miles, and East Jerusalem is 27 square miles. Land deemed to be Palestinian Land according to UN Resolutions but which is occupied by Israel and not under Palestinian Control is 99% of Area C plus East Jerusalem. This equals 1333 square miles, or 853,120 acres. This calculation is consistent with statements in many publications that Israel is in control of 60% of the west bank. 3. Homes intentionally demolished since 1967 The Israeli Committee Against Housing Demolitions estimates that some 27,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1967, based on information collected from the Israeli Ministry of Interior, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Civil Administration, UN bodies and agencies, Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights groups, our ICHAD field monitoring. Administrative Detention of Prisoners On 11 December 2012, the office of then Prime Minister Salam Fayyad stated that since 1967, 800,000 Palestinians, or roughly 20% of the total population and 40% of the male population, had been imprisoned by Israel at one point in time. About 100,000 had been held in administrative detention. Olive Trees Cut down According to the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Applied Research Institute Jerusalem (ARIJ), approximately 800,000 olive trees have been uprooted since Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza in 1967. Settlement Colonies and Settlement Population As of the end of 2012, there are 125 government- sanctioned Israeli settlements in the West Bank (not including East Jerusalem and settlement enclaves within Hebron). In addition, there were approximately 100 “settlement outposts” located throughout the West Bank. The outposts do not have official government recognition, although many of them were established with governmental assistance. Outposts are generally smaller than recognized settlements. Twelve large Israeli neighborhoods were built in areas that Israel annexed to the Jerusalem Municipality after 1967. These neighborhoods are also considered settlements under international law. In addition, settler enclaves have 3 been built in the heart of Palestinian neighborhoods in these annexed areas, with aid by the Israeli government and the Jerusalem Municipality. There are an estimated 515,000 settlers in the West Bank. This figure is derived from two sources: According to data provided by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2011, 325,456 people were living in the settlements of the West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem. According to data provided by the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies, the population of the Israeli neighborhoods in East Jerusalem numbered 190,423 people at the end of 2011. The population of the West Bank and Gaza in 2014 was 4,550,368 people. Source: http://www.pcbs.gov.ps/site/881/default.aspx#Population 12. Water Diversion from the West Bank to Israel The 1993 Oslo Accords established the division of water between Israel and the Palestinian Authority as follows: 80% of water in the West Bank pumped from the mountain aquifer – a joint Israeli- Palestinian resource – would be allotted to Israeli use and the remaining 20% for Palestinian use. This discriminatory allocation was slated to be an interim five-year arrangement, meant to remain in force only until the signing of final status accords. Of the fresh water available from this source, Israel currently consumes 303 cubic meters per year (mcmy) or 67%. An additional 35 mcmy of fresh water is currently being used by Israeli settlements from the eastern aquifer which is a purely Palestinian source making the total Israeli consumption of fresh water from the mountain aquifer 338 mcmy. 338 million cubic meters is 89 billion gallons of water.
