Lemon Bay High School AP Language and Composition Group Activity: Summary and Analysis of Fast Food Nation and Supersize Me Required Texts: Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, by Eric Schlosser Documentary--Supersize Me: A Film of Epic Portions. Directed by Morgan Spurlock. Introduction: To further aid in our understanding of the summer reading texts and to better internalize strategies for rhetorical analysis (5 Steps and What/How Approach), we will complete a group activity. Students will form groups and analyze one section of the novel Fast Food Nation or the documentary Supersize Me. Each group will present their findings to the rest of the class via a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation. Groups should act professional and be well prepared for their presentations. We will cover presentation skills in a separate lesson before you present. Groups should choose one of the following: Sections from Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, by Eric Schlosser: The Introduction Chapters 1-4: from “The American Way” Chapters 5-7: from “Meat and Potatoes” Chapters 8-9: from “Meat and Potatoes” Chapter 10: Globalization The documentary Supersize Me: A Film of Epic Portions. Directed by Morgan Spurlock. Group Activity Directions: 1. Students will divide into six groups—one for each section of FFN and one for SSM. 2. Each group will create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation and provide a summary and analysis of their section. • Short summary • Central idea(s) + two direct quotes (support) • Author’s purpose + two direct quotes (support) • How author achieves their purpose + two direct quotes (support) 3. Have an introduction, body, and conclusion. 4. Use text, images, and possibly video. 5. Correctly cite in-text and on a works cited page. This assignment is worth 30 points.
