4 September, 2018 Kick of Meeting of Agri Renaissance BRIEF PRESENTATION OF CALABRIA REGION 2 BRIEF PRESENTATION OF CALABRIA REGION Calabria Region is generally known as the “toe” of the “boot” of Italy and is a long and narrow peninsula which stretches from north to south for 248 km (154 mi), with a maximum width of 110 km (68 mi). Some 42% of Calabria's area is mountainous, 49% is hilly, while plains occupy only 9% of the region's territory. The region covers 15,222 km2 (5,877 sq m) and has a population of about 2 million. 3 1. GDP PPS per capita in Calabria is the lowest in Italy. Everyone gives the name at three National Park. Pollino Mountains in the north of the region are rugged and form a natural barrier separating Calabria from the rest of Italy. Parts of the area are heavily wooded, while others are vast, wind-swept plateaus with little vegetation. These mountains are home to a rare “Loricato Pine” variety. La Sila is a vast mountainous plateau, which stretches for nearly 2,000 square kilometres along the central part of Calabria. Its highest point at Monte Scuro, at 1,928 m. and is full of wide. The area boasts numerous lakes and dense coniferous forests “Laricius Pine”. The Aspromonte massif forms the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula bordered by the sea on three sides. Calabria performance has improved (ITF6) (+7.7%) 8 PRESENTATION OF PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE REGIONAL DIAGNOSIS 9 BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE REGION SOCIOECONOMIC CONTEXT OF AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN THE REGION COMPARISON OF PRODUCTIVITY BETWEEN ITALY AND CALABRIA. Substantial stability in the value of agricultural production in 2017 (+ 0.6% compared to the previous year, estimated figure) in contrast with the national average (-2.4%). Increase in production volume (+ 5.6%) in contrast with the national average (-2.4%). Value added up (+ 6.5% in volume) in contrast with the rest of the country. 10 SOURCE: ISTAT SOCIOECONOMIC CONTEXT OF AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN THE REGION Agricultural economy trend - Year 2018 In 2017, economic activity grew modestly, in line with the previous year. The cyclical recovery, underway for three years, is mainly supported by domestic demand. There is a recovery in the productivity of companies, which however remains at levels significantly lower than the rest of the country. The gap depends on internal factors within companies (e.g. low use of advanced technologies). 11 SOURCE: ISTAT SOCIOECONOMIC CONTEXT OF AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN THE REGION Added value of agriculture in the EU The added value of Italian agriculture represents 18% of the total 28 EU value with 31.5 billion euro. At the end of 2017, 919 thousand employees in agriculture, forestry and fishing, equal to 3.7% of those employed in Italy. Italy accounts for 35% -36% of European exports of apples and grapes, 47% of kiwi, 61% of shelled hazelnuts, and 35% of nursery products.
