T O South Africans generally, and U itlanders O f w particularly, no explanation the follo ing pages is necessary, but for the guidance of readers only slightly acquainted with the T ran svaal and the Conditions of life therein , it has been thought desirable to give some idea of t he scope and character O f the book which would help them to a proper understanding O f it . For this purpose I think I cannot do better than quote the following from a notice of the coming volume which appeared some time ago in a T ransvaal newspaper “ It has long been a matter for surprise that the o ffi cial side of the T ransvaal has never yet been laid under contributi o n fo r a literary work of more than transient interest . Considering the rich store o f virgin material to hand and the vast clientele interested , directly and indirectly, in the country, the market is assured and su fficient to tempt any ’ ii . Autho r Nole s . T h e f fa r publisher. di fi culty, so , has been the want of a man capable of handling the subject . o o c an N newc mer, whatever his literary gifts , be trusted t o describe the T ransvaal Boer in his many T o o n e aspects . know him , must have lived with l a n d him , speak his anguage, have at once a o f broad sympathy for his limitations , and a sense humour to present them in an attractive form . T h e task has at length been undertaken by o n e e minently qualified , and we have been favoured with f O M . a perusal the S of his work, which , under the ‘ ’ P rin sl o o s d o r title Of Prinsloo of p , will shortly b . be published y Dunbar Bros , of London and fi Johannesburg. It is absolutely the rst a ttempt on the part O f a qualified writer to depict the T a s i s n e w ransvaaler he under the dispensation . Globe trotter s by the score have given ' m ore or c o n a less inaccurate pi tures of the Boer the f rm s ’ ! o el a o and the of Cape C lony, but no one has s hown him in the town and i n the o ffi cial ring t h e Boer that is destined fo r a l ong time to loom sl i m l arge i n the public eye at home ; the , n wh o i s arrow, yet interesting, Boer our lord and m aster and the incubus on the p rogress of the T ransvaal .
