(Received 19 August 2009,accepted 21October2009) Abstract –Awidelyaccessible working list of knownplantspeciesisconsidered the number one targetof the GlobalStrategyforPlantConservation. Anindexof published namesof liverworts and hornworts between 2006 and 2008isprovided aspart of acontinued effort in working towardproducing apreliminary world checklist of theseplants.Included in the list arethosenamesoverlooked byearlierindices. The list includesover20highertaxa, 246speciesorinfraspecificvalid names, and three fossils. Liverworts /hornworts /index/nomenclature INTRODUCTION Recently, therehasbeen amajorinternationallycoordinated effort to synthesizethe vast amountof nomenclatural, taxonomicaland globaldistribu- tionaldataforliverworts (Marchantiophyta)and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) (e.g.,Söderström etal., 2008;von Konrat etal., 2008,2009). Theseendeavours are criticalinproviding the foundation todevelop aworking checklist of liverworts and hornworts worldwide. Thisissignificantbecausethe Convention on BiologicalDiversity (CBD)adopted the GlobalStrategyforPlantConservation (GSPC)whichsetthe targetdateof2010tocompleteawidelyaccessible working list of all knownplantspecies(Lughadha, 2004). The criticalneed forthistarget tobeachieved and the implicationsforconservation, taxonomy, and botanical sciencewererecentlyoutlined byPaton etal. (2008). Thisindexfollows on from the resourcefulindicesof recentyears:Index of Hepatics(Crosby&Engel,2006)and the seriesIndexof Bryophytes2001-2004 (Crosby&Magill,2005) and Indexof Bryophytes2005(Crosby&Magill,2006). *Correspondenceand reprints:[email protected] 4M.v.Konrat,L.Söderström,A.Hagborg,M.R.Crosby&J.J.Engel Inthisindexweattempttolist citationsfornamespublished forliverworts and hornworts during the period January 1,2006 through December31,2008. Names thatwereoverlooked byearlierindicesarealsoincluded. Abibliographycontains completecitationsforthe placesof publication of the names.Although basionyms fornewcombinationsarelisted aswell asthe originalpublication, thesearenot referenced in the bibliography. The formatgenerallyfollows thatof previous indices. The type country of anewspeciesand infraspeciesisprovided. Forfossils westatethe geologicalperiod. The type Taxon isalsoprovided fornewnamesof highertaxa. All names, including basionymsand replaced namesarearranged alphabetically.Asamatterof referenceautonymsareincluded onlyforthe period in whichthe presentindexcovers, providing ausefulresourceindicating publication dateatwhichthe autonymwasfirst created. Although namesthatwe judge tobeinvalidlypublished areincluded in the list, wehaveattempted notto include datathatcould beinterpreted asvalidating them. Therefore, the invalidly published namesarenotaccepted bythe authors of thisindex, and theyarenot thereforepublished underthe ViennaCode of BotanicalNomenclature(McNeill etal. 2006). Asin previous indices,no disposition isprovided toanaccepted name ortothe taxonomy. The valid numberof published namesincludesover20highertaxa, 246speciesorinfraspecificnames,and three fossils.Noteworthyisthe influence of molecularinvestigationswithhigherclassification and taxonomy.Inthe past severalyears, the application of molecularphylogeneticstothe unraveling of liverwort phylogenyhasgenerated newinsights intothe evolutionary history of the groupand revolutionized liverwort classification (Crandall-Stotler etal., 2009b). Thisisevidentwiththe useofmolecularmarkers forall but one of the 24highertaxa(abovethe rank of genus)described. Recently,Crandall-Stotler etal. (2009a, 2009b)provided atreatisesummarizing historicaland contemporary liverwort classification. Incontrast, moleculardatain conjunction withmorphologicalcharacters wasused forless than15taxaatthe rank of species. METHODS Authoritiesand citation abbreviationsfollowthe on-line version of Authors of PlantNamesatthe RoyalBotanicGardens,KewWebsite (www.ipni.org ),whichisanupdated version of Brummitt &Powell (1992). For nomenclaturalelements wefollowthe ViennaCode of BotanicalNomenclature (McNeill etal., 2006). The following outlinesthe formatfornamespublished during the period: Name,Author(s),Citation [journal/publication,volume,page number], Year, Type country [subdivision notesin some cases]. The full referenceforaname isprovided in the index.Atthe end of each name, referraltothe full citation forthe journal/book article in whichthe name appeared isin the form: SEE Engel (2007). Entriesmayhaveanannotation in the formofaNOTE nearthe end. Theseannotationstypicallyidentifyinvalid or illegitimatenamesand mayprovide abrief description of the problem withthe name.
