First, Château Latour is joining us on Friday, May 17 for a very special dinner at the Peninsula Hotel to showcase their incredible wines – an event that promises to be an exclamation point to an incredible auction weekend. Second, following our highly successful Burgundy-specifi c March auction, we are able to change direction with our May sale and offer something for everyone. Bordeaux, Burgundy, California, Germany, Italy, Australia and Port are all well-represented. 2013 has begun well for us at Hart Davis Hart. Our auction business is up signifi cantly over 2012 and our retail sales have broken records month after month. We attribute our strong start to increasingly robust US demand and continued international expansion that has brought stability and dynamism to the marketplace. As a refl ection of the growing international infl uence, our team is currently spread out across the globe. While I write this, Gabe Suk is in Africa, Tina Wu is in China, and Paul Hart and Ben Nelson President Allan Frischman are in Brazil. Nick Pagoria, Dave Domer and Laurel Sallack Macupa returned from Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. Bordeaux yesterday. While we sell wine all over the world, the United States is still our home base. In this auction alone we are selling great American collections for consignors from Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. It is such an amazing experience to meet these collectors from all over the country and it is humbling to know they place their trust in HDH. A STELLAR SELECTON OF THE MOST HIGHLY-SOUGHT WINES OF CALIFORNIA (Lots 146-235) is a collection that includes many of the most important limited production wines being made in California today. Highlights include more than twenty different wines from Sine Qua Non. AN ASTOUNDING CACHE OF FIRST GROWTH BORDEAUX IN CASE QUANTITIES (Lots 897-1045) is the kind of collection upon which we have built our auction business. Everything offered from 1986 and beyond was purchased as futures and has been stored perfectly in professional storage until it was removed by HDH for this auction. This collection reminds us of the Fox Cellar, and should be considered in the same league by our buyers. This is the best of the best in pristine condition. As time passes it becomes more diffi cult to fi nd wines from great old cellars. Many of these exceptional collections have already been sold and many of the wines have been consumed. That is what makes “AN EXTRAORDINARY SELECTION FROM A MAGNIFICENT CELLAR” (Lots 1046-1191) a truly remarkable offering. These wines are extraordinarily rare, and almost impossible to fi nd. The consignor focused on the greatest rarities from named, prestigious long term collections. He bought DRC that was released late from Leroy and 1945 La Mission from the cellars of the Woltner family, as well as wines from Henry Singleton, Lenoir Josey, Norm Alexander, and Marshall Coyne among others. This is a second (and possibly the last) chance to buy a few bottles from many of these great old collections. Lastly, take a close look at the 3 bottles of 1953 Romanée Conti from DRC (Lot 1255). These wines were purchased from the cellar of the late William Burden. The fi ll levels are lower than you see on younger wine, as is appropriate for old bottles, but the wine is still a gorgeous color. If you want to drink Romanée Conti in original condition from an old-time cellar, this is your chance. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago and thank you, as always, for your support of HDH. Jean Garandeau, Commercial Director, and Antoine Donnedieu de Vabres, Ambassador for Château Latour, will present and discuss four vintages of this exceptional wine, as well as fi ve vintages of the Château’s illustrious second wine, Les Forts de Latour. This special dinner is part of our May auction weekend. Château Latour is widely considered the most consistent, elegant and complex of the First Growths, with the most limited production. Les Forts de Latour, arguably the greatest second wine produced in all of Bordeaux, is a selection of the estate’s best plots outside of the Enclos, including some parcels that come just short of the Grand Vin in a given vintage. The evening’s venue will be the elegant Water Tower Park Room at Chicago’s Peninsula Hotel. Acclaimed Chef Lee Wolen (former sous chef of Eleven Madison Park in NY), will create a special multi-course menu featuring contemporary American cuisine specially designed to pair with these exquisite wines: Château Latour: 2002, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1971 (magnum) Les Forts de Latour: 2005, 2004, 2003, 2000, 1996 For more information or to RSVP please contact [email protected] or 312.482 .9766.
