Education There are a range of educational establishments within the area with several local primary schools, a secondary school and a sixth form college in Ludlow. The independent sector is well catered for with Moor Park preparatory just a few minutes’ drive south of Ludlow; renowned facilities for older children are available at Shrewsbury School, Hereford Cathedral, Abberley Hall and Bedstone College. History The history of Caynham village is far richer than its modest size suggests. In 1086, shortly after William The Conqueror takes the throne, Caynham is mentioned in the Doomsday book. The Mortimers, Norman knights loyal to William received titles and land after the battle of Hastings, the manor of Caynham being one. Over the next seven centuries owners of Caynham included Wigmore Abbey, the Foxe, Powys and Calcott families. In 1852 it was acquired by the Curtis Dynasty. Caynham Court was bought by Sir William Curtis, 3rd Baronet, for his son and the property stayed in the family until the outbreak of the Second World War. Over the following years the house fell into disrepair until purchased by the current owners. After substantial restoration and refurbishment they moved into Caynham Court in the summer 2005. The Property Caynham Court is a fine Country house with a tremendous history passing through the hands of some extremely noteworthy families. In this time the house has had various alterations but the most extensive are the additions by the Curtis family in the mid Nineteenth Century which created a handsome brick built property with extensive accommodation over three floors. The H plan layout creates two distinct wings with canted bays housing large sashes. The internal features are just as impressive. A grand Hall at the centre of the house makes way to super reception rooms, a sweeping oak staircase winds to a galleried landing and access to the upper floors. Of particular note is the Drawing room or ‘blue room’ with an incredibly ornate ceiling. This theme of decorative plasterwork and original detailing continues throughout the house. Caynham Court, in part, has been renovated to exacting standards by the current owners, nowhere more so than in the kitchen and breakfast room. No expense has been spared and the workmanship and quality of finish is second to none. Modern expectations are catered for in the kitchen, but not limited to this space; the electrical and plumbing systems have been completely overhauled, and a network of routers and Cat 6 wiring mean excellent wireless broadband through the house. This property offers the next custodian a wonderful chance to finish what has been started and bring the remaining parts of Caynham Court back to the glories of former years when the house played host to the great and good of Shropshire.
