Technology Fee Proposal Information Statement of Purpose: What is the goal of your project? (500 character limit) iDEEP will provide immersive digital creation and viewing for students, supporting Virtual Reality (VR) and Ultra-High Definition (UHD) panoramic video, digital music and audio production. Portable VR and UHD equipment will be loaned at MMC and BBC. Synchronized projectors and curved screen will allow for immersive movies, mapping, gaming, virtual travel; visual, graphic and performing arts -- using IMAX-like and VR headset environments showcasing student use of warping and blending software. Proposal Description: What is it that you are requesting for your project to be successful? (2000 character limit) iDEEP and library circulation services will provide students with an array consumer-grade portable equipment that can be borrowed to accomplish VR and AV project goals; and stationary equipment for group viewing and workshops. Kodak PixPro will be loanable to students, and an industry standard Kodak Nizo will be available for use with faculty supervision, taking student VR experience to the next level in support of documentary style production, AV augmentation, gaming, Google Earth imagery flybys, and more. Students will be able to learn AfterEffects, Autopano, Skybox and other software, and borrow and use VR cameras, 4K video cameras, SLRs, smart- phone video stabilizers, and audio enhancement microphones and mixers. Warping and blending software also will be provided from the control room for integrating a multitude of resources. ProTools software, drumboards and keyboards and quality mics will turn the currently sound dampened space into a modern production studio supporting internship skills needed in local businesses. iDEEP also will house a large floor to ceiling curved perforated projection screen with multiple laser video projectors, Crestron controller, rack assembly, Cisco switch and surround sound, and a traditional cinema screen and sound system with 4k projector. Hardware and software will allow faculty and students in the hybrid teaching environment to schedule group media viewings and VR sessions in a state-of-the-art environment with surround sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca1qH_3aeQo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsCySMLMUXY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lam1GRqcwt0 Immersive digital learning resources licenses will be funded for faculty and student needs during class days, and for weekend programming, allowing continuous watching and group discussion of VR, movies, documentaries, museum exhibits, and other educational and entertainment resources. Proposal Enhancement(s): The technology fee must "enhance instructional technology resources for students and faculty". How will this enhance the student's learning experience at FIU? (2000 character limit) Along with loaned VR and UHD equipment, 800 hundred square feet of existing sound-proofed television and radio studio in HL 155 will be transformed into workshop, production and screening space open to all students from both campuses, or who live or commute in the vicinity of BBC. iDEEP advances existing assets in the space already used by students, such as sound dampening floor to ceiling panels, dimmable light system and existing teleprompter system supporting public speaking and narration. Two adjacent screening and listening rooms, and a technology rack room will be enhanced. The cinema grade projector, screen and surround-sound system will be portable. In the larger fixed laser video projection room, using applied warping and blending software for integrating a multitude of resources, students and community members, industry leaders, and potential employers will view and augment student-produced work. Additionally, the space will be a hosting ground for Internet virtual travel experiences, to immerse groups of students into underwater caverns to explore marine ecosystems, and explore the creativity and science that students put into their work. In one of the adjacent rooms, and also partnering with an adjacent GIS lab (HL 124) for larger classes -- the latter being outfitted with Adobe Cloud and other software from other funding -- students will learn to integrate and use the VR cameras, 4K video cameras, SLRs, smart-phone video stabilizers, and audio enhancement microphones and mixers. This project also supports ongoing collaborations across the university -- many related to the expanding presence of CARTA at BBC, including the Ratcliffe Arts + Design Incubator at FIU, an expanded student newsroom and advertising/public relations facility, and increased interest in extending FIU's Arts and Theatre presence to the campus. Already, the Department of Journalism + Media at BBC has fostered growing collaborations with the Library, using VR, digital storytelling. Strategic Alignment: Describe how this project would align with any of these strategic goals? (2000 character limit) President's Vision and Goals 1. Support Student Success. 2. Develop Preeminent or Emerging Preeminent Programs. 3. Maintain Carnegie "Highest Research Activity" Designation. 4. Revitalize and expand FIU's infrastructure and financial base. 5. Other - Compliance/Cost to continue. iDEEP aligns with the FIUBeyondPossible2020 Strategic Plan in many ways, and helps foster collaborative resource use across science and technology, health care, education and the arts," and reflects FIU's "unapologetically be(ing) drivers of innovation, progress and lasting change." iDEEP will expand "...experiential learning opportunities for our students, with special attention to... [helping grow] available student internships." The World's Ahead tagline is reflected in how VR and AV production for headsets can be designed for larger room-scale panoramic experiences -- including the latest immersive designs for the movie theater industry, as well as multi-projector curved screen installations for historical and museum immersive experiences -- supporting numerous possible internships and future employment. The iDeep facility will enhance the quality of life for students living at BayView at BBC, providing opportunities to enhance studies and experience local and international culture through production, viewing, and immersion. In addition, iDEEP will help with technology education transfer to faculty in diverse fields whose students could benefit from creating projects using new technologies. iDEEP supports the effort to "provide technology and pedagogical support for hybrid course development," especially given existing AV capture technology in the space which can allow faculty to tape presentations in the immersive environment that can be used to hybridize their classes. FIU will foster a campus culture where innovation thrives and contributes to real-world solutions for real-world issues, in the process making a significant, positive impact on Miami’s and Florida’s economies. iDEEP will help bring a sense of belonging at BBC, providing a place for a nexus of creative education and entertainment that will help support student identity with FIU, retention and overall success. Proposal Benefits: How many students/faculty will benefit from the proposed project per calendar year? Benefited Students: 55112 Benefited Faculty: 2597 Please explain: (2000 character limit) iDEEP supports student and curricular need across multiple disciplines, and especially Journalism, SEAS, and the curriculum of CASE and CARTA. SEAS students can use underwater VR cameras. SIPA classes have been identified that need equipment to enhance cell phone audio and video. Graphic design and media programs now growing will benefit, as will students in the new Arts + Design Incubator. The Marketing Degree is now fully available at BBC, and iDEEP will be available to business students wishing to employ VR and AV in their projects. The warping and blending software is key to increasingly immersive advertising experiences. VR is increasingly employed in the field of Nursing education, and iDEEP will be reserve-able as a resource for the Foreign MD to Nursing program to help bring VR to clinical training. Equally, VR can support library facility orientations and asynchronous instruction of students about physical and virtual library resource access and use. The growing commitment of CARTA to elevate the music and theater programs at BBC will benefit from the ability of the Libraries to use the facility to stream HD audio/music video performances from the Lincoln Center in New York City. iDEEP also will provide for immersive experiences through ability to use the floor to ceiling screen for traveling library cultural exhibits using AV and VR. VR classes in Journalism have already worked with over 300 students who have been exposed to virtual reality storytelling and digital music production through initial steps to produce quality multi-media products. Because of prior VR work, at
