And, he made some significant contributions to the field, such as developing a new classification system for books. He also invented a cryptography machine that foreshadowed the famous Enigma machine used by the Germans during World War II. The library has been the repository of some unique and specialized materials. It has also posed significant preservation challenges. Jeanann Haas, Head of Special Collections at the University of Pittsburgh, will talk about some of the preservation issues affecting the collection and how those issues were addressed. Lance Lugar, formerly the observatory librarian and current librarian for the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, will discuss some of the content of the collection. Following the presentation there will be a tour of the library space and the observatory building, including the telescope rooms. If the weather cooperates, we should have a chance to look through a telescope.
