The map should be labeled and colored, one color for Allies and one for Central. 4. Use the code in this packet to decode page 31 in the notebook. Make this your last priority if you’re tight for time. World War I Study Guide so far. Practice on games page • Label the map on page 30. Color the Allies one color and the Central Powers a different color. The Sides (notebook page 30) – o Central Powers – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire o Allies – Great Britain, F rance, Russia (until they dropped out in 1917), United States (at the end), Belgium (because Germany invaded), Serbia (because A-H invaded to start it all). The most often missed are Belgium and Bulgaria, because they have similar names, and Serbia, because it’s in the middle like the Central Powers. We like to say Belgian waffles are good, so Belgium is one of the good guys, our Allies. • Causes of the War (write these in the white space on the right side of page 30) o Militarism – building up huge armies o Alliances – secret treaties to help each other if attacked o Imperialism – building an empire by taking other countries as colonies o Nationalism – different ethnic groups want our own nations, don’t want to be ruled by empires The Spark – The assassination of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia, and all the other countries were pulled in because of their alliances. • Reasons for US involvement even though most wanted to stay neutral (page 32) o cultural and economic ties to Britain (language, money) o German Submarine Warfare (and specifically the Lusitania) o Zimmerman Telegram (promised to give Texas, Arizona and NM back to Mexico if they’d fight against US Match the notes with the cartoon that illustrates each.
