Schooner Ancud anchored in Bahia San Juan de la Posesion (53 38S, 070 56W), along the Strait of Magellan, on September 21, 1843, and established a settlement there. Captain John Williams, a British mercenary employed for many years by the Chilean Navy, was the Captain of the Port of Ancud.
