Glossary Default – (As it relates to computer software) A particular setting in a program that is assigned automatically by the program and remains in effect until changed by a user. Example: The default font style and size in Word 2007 is Calibri, 11 point. Meaning every time you open Word 2007, it will use Calibri, 11 point as its font settings. Changing the default Font Style and Size in Word 2007 By default, Microsoft Office Word 2007 uses the Calibri font in font size 11 when you type text in a document, but you can change the default font and font size for all new documents that you create. If you wish to go back to the Word 2003 settings, the default font style and size in Word 2003 is Times New Roman, 12 pt. 1. Open Microsoft Word 2007. If you do not have a document open, create a new document. To do this: 1. Click the Microsoft Office Button. 2. Click “New” in the New Document task pane. 3. Click “Blank Document” in the middle column. 4. Click the “Create” button on the bottom-right side of the window. 2. Click on the “Home” tab in the Ribbon. 3. In the “Font” group, click the Font Dialog Box Launcher. 4. In the “Font” dialog box that opens, select the font, the font size, and any other attributes that you want. 5. Click the “Default” button on the bottom-left side of the box. 6. Click “Yes” to the message box that appears. 7. Click the “OK” button. Changing the Default Font Style/Size in Office 2007 1 Changing the default Line Spacing in Word 2007 In Microsoft Office Word 2007, the default spacing is 1.15 between lines and a blank line between paragraphs. The default spacing in Word 2003 documents is 1.0 (single space) between lines and no blank line between paragraphs. However, you can change the default line spacing for all new documents that you create. 1. Open Microsoft Word 2007. If you do not have a document open, create a new document. To do this, follow the instructions from step one of the section above. 2. Click on the “Home” tab in the Ribbon. 3. In the “Styles” group, click on the “Change Styles” button. 4. Select “Styles Set” from the small menu that appears. 5. From the sub-menu that appears, select “Word 2003.” 6. To set this setting as the default, click on the “Change Styles” button again and click on “Set as Default.” Changing the default Font Style and Size in Excel 2007 By default, Microsoft Office Excel 2007 uses the Calibri font in font size 11 when you type data in a worksheet, but you can change the default font and font size for all new workbooks that you create. If you wish to go back to the Excel 2003 settings, the default font style and size in Excel 2003 is Times New Roman, 12 pt. 1. Open Microsoft Excel 2007. Click the “Microsoft Office Button,” and then click “Excel Options.” 2. Select the “Popular” category on the left side of the “Excel Options” window. Under the “When creating new workbooks” section, do the following: a. In the “Use this font” drop-down box, click the font that you want to use. b. In the “Font Size” drop-down box, click the font size that you want to use. 3. Click the “OK” button. NOTE To begin using the new default font and font size, you must restart Excel. The new default font and font size are used only in new workbooks that you create after you restart Excel; existing workbooks are not affected. Changing the default Font Style and Size in PowerPoint 2007 By default, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 uses the Calibri font when you type text into any text box that is part of the template in each presentation. You can change the default font style in a presentation, but you will have to do it for every presentation you create. There is no way to change the default font style for all presentations in PowerPoint 2007. If you wish to go back to the PowerPoint 2003 settings, the default font style for “Title” text boxes is Arial and Times New Roman for “Bulleted Lists” text boxes. To do so: 1. Open PowerPoint 2007. Create a new blank presentation if you do not have one already open. 2. Click on the “Design” tab in the Ribbon. 3. In the “Themes” group, click on the “Fonts” button. 4. From the “Built-In” Fonts menu, select “Office Classic, Arial, Times New Roman.” Once you change to the Office Classic Font theme, all current and future text boxes apart of the template in the current presentation will take on these properties. See the “NOTE” on the next page. Changing the Default Font Style/Size in Office 2007 2 NOTE It is a good idea to make this change right at the start of your presentation, before you create additional slides. Remember! You will have to do this for every presentation you create if you want to go back to the PowerPoint 2003 settings. Changing the settings for Text Boxes that you can draw The default font in any new PowerPoint 2007 presentation is Calibri, 18 pt, black, for text boxes other than the ones that are part of the default design template (ex. text boxes you can draw). If you wish to go back to the PowerPoint 2003 settings, the default font style and size for textboxes in PowerPoint 2003 is Arial, 18 pt. If you are making a new PowerPoint 2007 presentation and do not want to have to change the font each time you add a new text box in the current presentation, the solution is simple. 1. Open PowerPoint 2007. Create a new blank presentation if you do not have one already open. 2. Click on the “Insert” tab on the Ribbon. 3. In the “Text” group, click on the “Text Box” button. 4. Click and drag on your slide to draw a text box to a specific size. 5. Select a new font and size from the Ribbon and make any other selections (ex. color). 6. Right-click on the border of the new text box and choose “Set as Default Text Box” from the shortcut menu. Once you change the default font, all future text boxes in the current presentation, will take on these properties, but text boxes that you had already created earlier, will not be affected. You will have to manually change those text boxes. NOTE It is a good idea to make this change right at the start of your presentation, before you create additional slides. Remember! You will have to do this for every presentation you create if you want to go back to the PowerPoint 2003 settings. Changing the default Font Style and Size in Outlook 2007 By default, Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 uses the Calibri font in font size 11 when you type text, but you can change the default font and font size. If you wish to go back to the Outlook 2003 settings, the default font style and size in Outlook 2003 is Times New Roman, 12 pt. 1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2007. From the menu bar, select Tools>Options. 2. From the “Options” dialog window, click on the “Mail Format” tab. 3. Under the “Stationery and Fonts” section, click the “Stationery and Fonts” button. 4. In the “Signatures and Stationery” box that opens, on the “Personal Stationery” tab, under the “New mail messages” section, click the “Font” button. 5. In the “Font” dialog box that opens, on the “Font” tab, select the font, the font size, and any other attributes that you want. 6. Click the “OK” button. 7. If you wish to change the default font for replied to or forwarded messages, proceed with the following: a. Under the “Replying or forwarding messages” section, click the “Font” button. b. In the “Font” dialog box that opens, on the “Font” tab, select the font, the font size, and any other attributes that you want. c. Click the “OK” button. 8.
