At the time of inception, the college was named as ''Jamuguri College'' which later on renamed after the famous freedom fighter Tyagbir Hem Baruah as per decision of the Executive Committee of the college on February 8, 1965. The college started its journey from Jamuguri Higher Secondary School to Bapuji Bhawan and finally to its present campusat Kusumtola (Karchantola) where on the auspicious day of February 5, 1964 the foun- dation stone of the permanent building of the college was laid by the then Education Minister of Assam Late Debakanta Baruah amidst peace, tranquillity and serene beauty of nature. The col- lege has presently a sprawling campus of about 30 acres of land with natural wetlands, converted to fish farms by the Alumni Association of the college. There is a botanical garden with fruit bearing trees and quiet a large numbers medicinal plants and valuable timber woods. The tea garden of the college under "Seuj Udyug" scheme, the first of its kind in any college in the entire Brahmaputra Valley started with the aim of generating resources for making the college self- reliant to some extent. The college received its Deficit Grants-in-aid of the University Grant Commission (UGC) in 1974. With major development like introduction of science stream in 1989, the college completed its glorious journey of 50 years in 2013. The college which was once started with a few students is presently offering various courses to nearly 2500 students. The college was started with seven departments viz. English, Assamese, Economics, Education, History and Political Science at both intermediate and undergraduate level. New departments like Statistics, Mathematics, Geography, Nepali were also introduced later to cater to growing needs of students. There is constant effort by the authority now to introduce the Commerce stream which was once introduced but later on abandoned in 1996 owing to some technical difficulties. The college has undergone assessment by National Assesment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) two times first in 2004 and later in 2011. On the first assess- ment the college was accredited with the grade C+ while in the next the college was accreditated with Grade - B. PROSPECTUS 2020-21/ Page-2 THB COLLEGE Besides imparting knowledge to the students, the college is contributing a bit towards social and economic upliftment of the community. The real strength of the college lies in the faculty members who have been demonstrating variety of skills and knowledge for years and tirelessly working towards illumination of the young minds of the locality for greater social change. The college has a number of societies, like Economic Planning Forum, Women Cell, Geographi- cal Society, Education Society, Political Science Forum, Biological Society, TRIDHARA (a lliterary society of depts. of Nepali, English and Assamese of the college) etc. to conduct differ- ent activities of academic and social importance. Holding of national or state level seminars/ symposium/training programs on areas of greater social importance is a regular exercise of almost all departments of the college aiming at benefiting the fraternity of the college and the local community. The works undertaken by NSS cell, UGC extension cell and the Women cell of the college are stupendously working in this regard. The Career Guidance & Counselling Cell (CGCC) extends all moral support to needy students and career guidance to all students by regularly organizing various talks on emerging career options in the presenttimes. NCC is a vital organ of the college. Under NCC the college has been successfully training and grooming hun- dreds of students since its introduction in the college which finally helped the students to grab recruitment in ARMY, NAVY and AIR FORCES of the Country. The Tyagbir Hem Baruah College wing of the Bharat Scout and Guide which was inaugurated in 2003 is also rendering its services to the college and community. Hundreds of girls and boys from this rural college have been groomed into responsible citizens and dedicated social workers under Scout and Guide.Of late, all departments regularly hold parents’ meet and departmental alumni meet to furhter strenthen it’s networks and identify areas of intervention towards overall development of the college. PROSPECTUS 2020-21/ Page-3 THB COLLEGE MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Photo At the very outset, I would like to extend my heartiest love and reverence to all those who had come forward to establish the college at Jamugurihat. Then, I congratulate the stu- dents who are taking admission into H.S. and undergraduate as well as other certificate and diploma courses offered by this institution. Tyagbir Hem Baruah College is the only higher co-educational institution of the greater Naduar area of present Sonitpur and Biswanath districts. The college was established in 1963 and from the very beginning it has been rendering services to the needy students as well as to the society of the greater Naduar area in respect to the cause of higher educa- tion and knowledge. In addition to traditional courses the college has introduced a few new courses viz. Computer Education and the Career oriented courses like fish and fish- ery technology, food processing and preservation and sericulture are run by Career Ori- ented Programme. Further, we are going to introduce two new job-oriented courses in BSC (Information Technology and BCA) from this session to serve the emerging needs of the students. The college has study centres like IDOL and KKHSOU where many stu- dents are undergoing degree and postgraduate courses in various subjects through mode of distance learning. From this session we are going to start Assam State Open School (ASOS) under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) with a vew to offer- ing opporunity to the students who wish to undergo Higher Secondary Courses in dis- tance mode. The college takes pride in having a good numbers of students in every session. Though we have not sufficient teaching faculties yet we feel proud of having a good numbers of teachers with M. Phil and Phd with national and international repute in research works. The college is affiliated to Gauhati University. As per the instruction of G.U the college has adopted Semester System from the academic session 2011-12 in the under graduate courses. Regular attendance in the classes and sincerity is very important for the stu- dents in the Semester System I hope it will be able to meet the needs of the students in the present global scenario.I earnestly expect regular attendance and sincerity from stu- dents to maintain spirit of the semester system and ensure advncement of thier career.
