He is the author of over 60 articles, book chapters and papers exploring the relationships between media studies, journalism, Law, the city and popular culture; media representation; cultural flows in the Asia Pacific; the idea of popular culture as vernacular theory; superheroes and comic book culture; and the role of merchandising paratexts in media convergence, particularly around the development of transmedia narratives. Jason is a regular media commentator for ABC Radio, Television and Online. He is the co-author of Media and Journalism: New Approaches to Theory and Practice (with N Goc and L Tynan), OUP, 2008. Terry Flew Correspondence: [email protected] Terry Flew is Professor of Media and Communications in the Creative Industries Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). His books include Global Creative Industries (Polity, 2013); The Creative Industries, Culture and Policy (Sage, 2012); Key Concepts in Creative Industries (Sage, 2012); Understanding Global Media (Palgrave, 2007); and New Media: An Introduction (Oxford, 2008). He is a Member of the Executive Board of the International Communications Association, and was President of the Australian and New Zealand Communications Association from 2009-2010. He is a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts for Humanities and Creative Arts, and was a member of the ARC Research Evaluation Committee (REC) for the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation round in 2012. In 2011-12, he was seconded from QUT to become a Commissioner with the Australian Law Reform Commission, chairing the National Classification Scheme Review. Falk Hartig Correspondence: [email protected] Dr. Falk Hartig is a post-doctoral researcher at the Frankfurt Inter-Centre-Programme on new African-Asian Interactions (AFRASO) at Frankfurt University, Germany, and a Contributing Scholar at the University of Southern California Centre on Public Diplomacy (CPD). His main research interests include China’s public and cultural diplomacy, China’s global image and the internationalization of Chinese media. His work has been published in The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, Communication, Politics & Culture, and the Journal of Chinese Political Science. He is currently working on a book on Chinese Public Diplomacy: The Rise of Confucius Institutes, to be published by Routledge in early 2015. 1 The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies Volume I – Issue I – Winter 2014 Beryl Hawkins Correspondence: [email protected] Beryl Hawkins is a former radio journalist, talk show host, professional voiceover artist/narrator and producer who worked in news and talk show entertainment for more than five years at a leading news radio station in Washington D.C. As a media strategist in New York City, she has developed a number of national media campaigns throughout her public relations career, working with national leaders and cultural and advocacy groups. She also teaches Broadcast Voice Training and other journalism courses at Temple University Japan in Tokyo. Robert Hyland Correspondence: [email protected] Dr. Robert Hyland teaches cinema studies at the Bader International Study Centre, Queens University, (Canada) where he specializes in Asian cinema. Prior to his current post, he completed his PhD in film studies at the University of Kent in England, and has taught cinema studies at universities in Taiwan, Japan, Canada and the UK. Hyland has written about both Japanese and Taiwanese cinema, and has published for the journal Asian Cinema; the anthology Horror to the Extreme; and has work forthcoming in the Journal of East Asian Popular Culture. He is a reviewer for the journal Asian Cinema and in 2013 organized the Post Olympics Chinese Cinema Studies Symposium held at Herstmonceux Castle. He is currently under way editing a future special edition of the IAFOR journal on Chinese cinema. Barry Natusch Correspondence: [email protected] Barry Natusch is a professor at College of Economics, Nihon University in Tokyo who specializes in international relations, economics and sociolinguistics. He has taught linguistics at universities but now teaches undergraduate and graduate seminars in management theory, language learning theory, technology enhanced language learning and communication theory. He is active in filmmaking and in the field of data representation using visual media. Maciej Pletnia Correspondence: [email protected] Maciej Pletnia is a PhD student at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland. From 2012 to April 2014 he was a research student at Tokyo University, and in 2009 he conducted research at Tokyo Gakugei University. His main research interests include collective memory of the Pacific War in contemporary Japan, Japanese nationalism, and cultural and social factors in international relation in the Far East Asia. His most recent works includes: Resurgence of memory – Abe Shinzō and his approach towards Japan’s troubled past; and Collective Memory as a Source of International Conflicts: Controversies Surrounding Yasukuni Shrine. 2 The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies Volume I – Issue I – Winter 2014 Seiko Yasumoto Correspondence: [email protected] Dr. Seiko Yasumoto teaches East Asian media and popular culture at the University of Sydney. Her primary research includes Japanese government media policy and broadcasting media within the domain of popular culture. The scope includes transmission of content, textual analysis, copyright, media industries, adaptation theory, youth culture, audience analysis and trans-national media cultural flows in Japan and East Asia. She was co-editor of the scholarly journal Ilha Do Desterro 2006 and guest editor of The Journal of the Oriental Society of Australia special edition on Global Media 2010 and on a number of editorial boards. She is currently the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Asian Studies which is affiliated with The International Academic Forum (IAFOR).
