Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods The University of Erfurt – Course Catalogue Summer Semester 2009 Jun 11, 2009 07:46:33 5/401 0 01 1 005 Heinrich Niehues-Pröbsting - Alexander Thumfart The improvement of mankind. Humanism and Anti-Humanism. BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Di 14—16 LG 1 218 S <6> WP O/Q lim. acc. 35 D Since Renaissance and modernity man is conceptualized as "animal educabile". But, what might be the aimes or goals of such an education, and who might be the educators? If man is his own sculptor, as Giovanni Pico della Mirandola holds, is he not in need of permanent transformation and even transgression of his own humanity? Does humanism then terminate in anti-humanism? In the context of contemporary technical advancments and abilities the questions concerning the improvement and the humanism and anti-humanism of mankind are undeniable. The seminar will deal with the questions of humanism and anti-humanism on the basis of selected, modern and contemporary texts. 0 01 1 006 Norbert Clemens Baumgart - Christoph Bultmann Introduction to the psalms: Aspects of their background and their reception BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Mo 14—16 Clemenska. ° S <6> WP O/Q lim. acc. 30 D The course will be devoted to the study of selected psalms, notably psalms 110, 15 compared with 24, 6, 137, 23, 1 which are distinguished by their genre as well as there theme. The issue of the historical situation in which these poems and prayers originated will be addressed as will the issue of their reception history in the early modern period, notably with Erasmus, Martin Luther and Robert Bellarmine. Of the modern commentaries the work by F.-L. Hossfeld and E. Zenger will be given priority. 0 01 1 007 Jamal Malik International Summer School: Muslims in the West BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Sa 15.08.2009 LG 4 D08 S <6> WP Q lim. acc. 15 E The relevance of Islamic cultures and Muslim religious forms for the history of European culture and idea has evoked quite some interest in modern times, in particular since the 18th century. However, the topic became politically crucial only since the 1970s, whence, as a result of labor-migration, new Muslim communities established themselves in Western Europe. The specific situations of Muslim communities in diasporic environment has led to a further re-interpretation of Islam, that encompasses so-called "fundamentalist groups" as well as the so-called "Euro-Islam". This internatinal summer school will elaborate on the history and cultures of Muslim communities in Europe as well as in America. We will consider questions such as new Islamic developments in the diaspora and the interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims, between majority and minority. We will also enquire into the concept of ethnification of Muslim cultures in the West. 30 students from Muslim countries as well as 15 students from Erfurt University are expected. Program and bibliography will be available in the secretariat in May 2009. Media of cultural self-understanding BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Di 10—12 LG 1 222 S <6> WP Q lim. acc. 30 D One characteristic of the history of eductaion in Europe is that the development of the sciences since antiquity and the differentiation of the cultural spheres in modernity have taken place in the context of an ongoing process of exchance with artistic and religious understandings of the world. The seminar introduces into arts and religions as media of cultural self-understanding. 0 01 1 009 Patrick Rössler From Star Trek to The Simpsons: TV quality programming in the U.S. BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Mo 10—12 LG 4 D01 S <6> WP Q lim. acc. 36 D The quality of TV programs is a permanent subject of public dispute. Recently, angloamerican productions are often described as models for high-quality programming. By focussing on crime and mystery shows since the 1960s, this course will analyze and apply the dimensions for quality assessment. Students will work together in groups to determine the characteristics of selected TV shows serving as case studies for our topic. 0 01 1 010 Harald Goll - Josef Römelt [Lebensschutz oder Selbstbestimmung? Ethische Diskurse bei Menschen in existentiellen Grenzsituationen] BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods Mo 16—18 Domstr. 9 SR 3 S <6> WP O/Q lim. acc. 30 D In confrontation with illness, physical or intellectual handicap people come to the bounds of their strengths in many situations: dealing with the prenatal diagnosis of handicaps and the question about abortion, with the respect of people with emotional illnesses on one side, the urgency of their therapy on the other one, with the protection and the autonomy of people with an intellectual handicap... A variety of ethical questions arises how these extreme experiences can be handled. The existing law tries frequently to strengthen the self-determination of the people in the conflicts. The seminar examines primarily the forms of ethical argumentation in the case of such decision situations. It requires a high degree of empathy in the corresponding questions and conflicts.
