He is the son of Mor Thiam, a renowned jazz musician and percussionist. He spent his first seven years in Senegal before leaving to live in the United States. Akon has had a difficult childhood in New Jersey, marked by many problems which led to the prison. After regaining his freedom, Akon began writing and composing songs. Highly influenced by a father fond of music and specifically percussion, he began to play before discovering the rhythms of rap and hip-hop.
