We are honored to serve as your host on this significant milestone, and I congratulate WPA on your first century of achievement and service dedicated to research and scholarship in the behavioral sciences . As Silicon Valley’s engine of innovation, technology and leadership, San José State is a natural host for this convention . We are proud of our amazingly diverse student population, comprising more than 33,000 individuals who reflect the opportunities, challenges and future of our region and of California, and our outstanding 4,500 faculty and staff members who support their intellectual discovery and personal growth . Today’s university students will work in groups all their professional lives, so they must be able to collaborate effectively with people from different backgrounds and working styles . They will need to be creative, resourceful and confident . Despite the breathtaking scope and speed of Silicon Valley technology that has radically changed the way we all live and work, we human beings with our unique talents, temperaments and tensions remain the beating heart of our communities, our workplaces and our families . Thus it is fitting that WPA and SJSU are partners for this centennial convention, for your work to learn more about what makes us tick will continue to be essential for the coming century . Convention Program 2020 | Page 9 Your theme this year, “Connecting the Past with the Future,” is timely and appropriate as we must build on the wisdom and lessons from all our heritages as we confront sobering social, technological, political, economic and environmental disruptions . I thank the Executive Board of Western Psychological Association for selecting San José State University as this year’s host . I especially want to recognize Dr . Clifton Oyamot, chair of the SJSU Psychology Department, and Dr . Greg Feist, SJSU psychology professor, for their outstanding efforts to bring WPA and our university together again and for their contributions to this year’s program . Finally, I encourage you to explore the entire Bay Area, including our home city of San José, while you’re here for the convention . We are complex region and a microcosm of the future of our state and our nation; you can sample the world right here in terms of people, food, culture and language . Please enjoy a rewarding convention, and I wish you all the best on WPA’s second century . Sincerely, Mary A . Papazian, Ph .D . President Western Psychological Association | Page 10 HOW WILL THE VIRTUAL CONFERENCE WORK? n online program will be made available to all attendees in early October and you’ll also be able to scroll through a list of the day’s presentations from our virtual lobby . AOur platform will allow you to select from sessions that are “live now,” from all live sessions, as well as poster and paper sessions . While all content is available on-demand, we encourage attendees to be present when the recorded presentations go live as they’ll be able to interact with the presenters synchronously using the chat function that is specific to each presentation . Perhaps the best part of our virtual conference platform is that it provides for virtual networking and virtual convention badges . You’ll be able to enter Zoom-like rooms to chat live through video with other attendees or use text-like chat to communicate with one another; there’s no longer a need to leave a note on our bulletin board as in past conferences . Keep an eye open on our chat rooms as there will be many arranged by topic, interest, and the like . We will also be hosting an exhibit hall as we do in-person and you’ll be able to peruse all that our exhibitors have to offer . They’ll be able to interact with you live through video chat and you’ll be able to download materials from each booth . In addition, we will be offering daily prizes to those who visit the most exhibitors and interact the most with them; more details will be provided as the convention approaches .
