We are honored to serve as your host on this significant milestone, and I congratulate WPA on your first century of achievement and service dedicated to research and scholarship in the behavioral sciences . As Silicon Valley’s engine of innovation, technology and leadership, San José State is a natural host for this convention . We are proud of our amazingly diverse student population, comprising more than 33,000 individuals who reflect the opportunities, challenges and future of our region and of California, and our outstanding 4,500 faculty and staff members who support their intellectual discovery and personal growth . Today’s university students will work in groups all their professional lives, so they must be able to collaborate effectively with people from different backgrounds and working styles . They will need to be creative, resourceful and confident . Despite the breathtaking scope and speed of Silicon Valley technology that has radically changed the way we all live and work, we human beings with our unique talents, temperaments and tensions remain the beating heart of our communities, our workplaces and our families . Thus it is fitting that WPA and SJSU are partners for this centennial convention, for your work to learn more about what makes us tick will continue to be essential for the coming century . Convention Program 2020 | Page 9 Your theme this year, “Connecting the Past with the Future,” is timely and appropriate as we must build on the wisdom and lessons from all our heritages as we confront sobering social, technological, political, economic and environmental disruptions . I thank the Executive Board of Western Psychological Association for selecting San José State University as this year’s host . I especially want to recognize Dr . Clifton Oyamot, chair of the SJSU Psychology Department, and Dr . Greg Feist, SJSU psychology professor, for their outstanding efforts to bring WPA and our university together again and for their contributions to this year’s program . Finally, I encourage you to explore the entire Bay Area, including our home city of San José, while you’re here for the convention . We are complex region and a microcosm of the future of our state and our nation; you can sample the world right here in terms of people, food, culture and language . Please enjoy a rewarding convention, and I wish you all the best on WPA’s second century . Sincerely, Mary A . Papazian, Ph .D . President Western Psychological Association | Page 10 HOW WILL THE VIRTUAL CONFERENCE WORK? n online program will be made available to all attendees in early October and you’ll also be able to scroll through a list of the day’s presentations from our virtual lobby . AOur platform will allow you to select from sessions that are “live now,” from all live sessions, as well as poster and paper sessions . While all content is available on-demand, we encourage attendees to be present when the recorded presentations go live as they’ll be able to interact with the presenters synchronously using the chat function that is specific to each presentation . Perhaps the best part of our virtual conference platform is that it provides for virtual networking and virtual convention badges . You’ll be able to enter Zoom-like rooms to chat live through video with other attendees or use text-like chat to communicate with one another; there’s no longer a need to leave a note on our bulletin board as in past conferences . Keep an eye open on our chat rooms as there will be many arranged by topic, interest, and the like . We will also be hosting an exhibit hall as we do in-person and you’ll be able to peruse all that our exhibitors have to offer . They’ll be able to interact with you live through video chat and you’ll be able to download materials from each booth . In addition, we will be offering daily prizes to those who visit the most exhibitors and interact the most with them; more details will be provided as the convention approaches . USC, the Col- lege of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Psychology are pleased to serve as sponsors of the annual meeting. I would especially like to thank WP A Presi- dent Stanley Sue, Executive Officer Chris Cozby, and Program Chair Steven Lopez for this opportunity. Located in Los Angeles, USC is one of the world’s leading private research universities. In the fall of 2009, USC enrolled 17,000 undergraduates, and 18,000 graduate and professional students. As a global university, the convention’s theme of diversity and its setting in Mexico are consistent with our multiple initiatives to address diversity issues within the United States. The Princeton Review has selected USC as one of 81 “Colleges with a Conscience” based on its outstanding record of involvement in the surrounding community with its large proportion of Latino Americans, African Americans and Asian Americans. In addition, USC enrolls more international students than any other U.S. university. Several mem- bers of the College’s Psychology Department are devoted to cross-national research in Korea, China, Rwanda, Finland, Sweden and Mexico, as well as multicultural research within the U.S.

  • Testimony of Lecia Brooks Chief of Staff, Southern Poverty Law Center
Testimony of Lecia Brooks Chief of Staff, Southern Poverty Law Center before the Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy Committee on Financial Services United States House of Representatives Dollars against Democracy: Domestic Terrorist Financing in the Aftermath of Insurrection February 25, 2021 My name is Lecia Brooks. I am chief of staff of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Now in our 50th year, the SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. SPLC lawyers have worked to shut down some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups by winning crushing, multimillion-dollar jury verdicts on behalf of their victims. We have helped dismantle vestiges of Jim Crow, reformed juvenile justice practices, shattered barriers to equality for women, children, the LGBTQ+ community, and the disabled, and worked to protect low-wage immigrant workers from exploitation. The SPLC began tracking white supremacist activity in the 1980s, during a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and other organized extremist hate groups. Today, the SPLC is the premier U.S. nonprofit organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists. In the early 1990s, the SPLC launched its pioneering Teaching Tolerance program to provide educators with free, anti-bias classroom resources, such as classroom documentaries and lesson plans. Now renamed Learning For Justice, our program reaches millions of schoolchildren with award-winning curricula and other materials that promote understanding of our nation’s history and respect for others, helping educators create inclusive, equitable school environments.

  • 2020 Commencement Program.Pdf
Commencement MAY 2020 WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: This is an occasion of profoundly mixed emotions for all of us. On one hand, there is the pride, excitement, and immeasurable hope that come with the culmination of years of effort and success at the University of Connecticut. But on the other hand, there is the recognition that this year is different. For the first time since 1914, the University of Connecticut is conferring its graduate and undergraduate degrees without our traditional ceremonies. It is my sincere hope that you see this moment as an opportunity rather than a misfortune. As the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus observed, “Difficulties show us who we are.” This year our University, our state, our nation, and indeed our world have faced unprecedented difficulties. And now, as you go onward to the next stage of your journey, you have the opportunity to show what you have become in your time at UConn. Remember that the purpose of higher education is not confined to academic achievement; it is also intended to draw from within those essential qualities that make each of us an engaged, fully-formed individual – and a good citizen. There is no higher title that can be conferred in this world, and I know each of you will exemplify it, every day. This is truly a special class that will go on to achieve great things. Among your classmates are the University’s first Rhodes Scholar, the largest number of Goldwater scholars in our history, and outstanding student leaders on issues from climate action to racial justice to mental health.
