This initiative, compiled by I.C.E. in co-operation with A.I.E., the Italian Publishers Association, was started in 1999 and aims to encourage the exchange of information between the Italian publishing trade and the publishing trade world-wide, and to provide a showcase for the most recently published Italian titles. This enterprise forms part of a wider project which I.C.E. and A.I.E. are undertaking to promote greater awareness of Italian publishing on international markets and closer working relationships between Italian and foreign companies. This catalogue is also available as a CD-ROM and can be accessed on the Internet at the following address: www.italien-on-line.de/buchmesse-2001 A.I.E. and I.C.E. are attending the Frankfurt Book Fair and will be at Hall 5.1 Stand C 902 to provide information on the publishing industry in Italy, as well as to assist Italian and foreign companies who are interested in programmes promoting the industry. 7 General Information What is I.C.E. ? I.C.E. (Italian Institute for Foreign Trade) was established in 1926 to assist the Ministry of Foreign Trade in technical matters. Today, it is the government agency that promotes the internationalisation of Italian companies, in particular SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), and boasts a network of offices worldwide. I.C.E. promotes trade, industrial and technical co-operation and provides economic information on Italy. Furthermore, I.C.E. gathers market data at an international level in order to keep Italian companies abreast of business opportunities abroad, and to assist them in their search for foreign partners. Foreign companies frequently turn to the I.C.E. offices in order to source and analyse potential Italian suppliers and partners suited to their specific requirements. The Headquarters located in Rome is managed by the following departments: Information, Training, Promotion and Co-operation. Enhanced use of Information Technology and of the Internet facilitates the constant exchange of information and feedback from its world-wide network. With about fifty thousand titles published including new titles and reprints, we are witnessing either a substantial stability in the supply produced (the positive interpretation) or a slight fall in titles produced (the negative one). 1998 has already gone down as the year with the lowest absolute growth of the whole decade (with an increase of only 1%). Between 1991 and 1998 we experienced a progressive, if not steady, drop in average production growth, which however maintained an upward trend until then. Three factors characterise the overall make-up of book production and deserve to be noted: the share of new titles (61.5%) out of supply as a whole, showing a continuing commitment by publishers to renewing their product lines; the trend towards making more pocket versions, indicating more adaptable pricing strategies; and the increase in titles translated from other languages (23.4%), particularly English, as a condition „feeding“ supply from publishers. At all events the book market (books and electronic publishing products, including export of publishing products and services) shows an overall increase of 1.0% on the previous year in 2000. This growth seems drawn mostly from products on digital media (up 8.7%: educational, professional & art titles, works of reference, multimedia encyclopaedias, but above all games) rather than from those in traditional book formats, which continue to show growth rates slightly above inflation, excluding children’s books. This market seems made for the 10% of electronic off-line products, more than 600 billion, that are sold through the various channels 12 Italian book title production of distribution (works of reference, educational titles, games, but also professional products for the legal and tax markets and the like). In this context, we cannot overlook the market for illegal photocopying concentrated in university and STM publishing, given the burden it places on our country. The overall market for book reprographics has been estimated at around 571 billion lire in 2000 lost to the turnover of the whole publishing industry (publishing houses, authors, distributors, bookshops). That’s equivalent to around 2.8 billion pages of books reproduced annually, not only in copy centres but also in libraries or within companies etc. This figure represents something like 10.3 million books.
