Memorial Day 2020 The City of Apopka and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10147 would like to invite the public to join us as we honor the lives and legacy of our fallen military heroes on Monday, May 25, 2020, in observance of Memorial Day. The service will begin promptly at 11 AM at the Veterans Memorial located at the Edgewood/Greenwood Cemetery, 141 South Edgewood Drive, Apopka, FL. Apopka Police: Free Women’s Self Defense Class The Apopka Police Department and Recreation Department will be hosting a free Women’s Self Defense Class on the second Monday of each month at the Billie Dean Community Center at Alonzo Williams Park. Apopka Youth Works 2020 The City of Apopka, Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce, and CareerSource Central Florida are teaming up to provide local students with unique opportunities to explore a variety of rewarding careers in the Apopka area. Apopka Youth Works is a career education program open to Apopka area high school students that are age 16 by June 1. Applications are due by April 12, 2020. Apopka Fire: Delivery of New Tower Truck The Apopka Fire Department recently took delivery of it’s newest fire truck, a 2019 Rosenbauer with a mid-mount Cobra Platform. Tower 1 has a 100’ aerial ladder, 300 gallons of water, ground ladders and several hundred feet of hose. It will be assigned to Fire Station 1 located in the heart of downtown Apopka and will be staffed by our Special Operations Team members. Tower 1 spent a week in mid-January at the Fire Rescue East Conference held in Daytona Beach. It was displayed in the Ocean Center Exhibit Hall during this annual event held by the Central Florida Fire Chiefs Association. The new truck featured at the Fire Rescue East Conference in Daytona Beach. This truck is essential for maintaining the stormwater system in compliance with National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit issued by the State. With a price tag of $411 thousand, this valuable tool will be used to clean pipes, drainage inlets, and other stormwater assets, which helps reduce pollution in our water ways and helps the City to prepare for summer storms.
